Why not buy cheaper groupset + 11-32 cassette?

"Cornwall..."
I'd be happy with a 32 on the back, for the not-so-occasional 15-20% inclines. I've got the same ratios on my winter/tourer and whilst I'm grateful for the smaller gears when it's loaded, I can also stay in the big ring most of the time for faster unloaded rides.

This was my thinking. For loaded and hilly the addition of an ultra compact crankset could be an option, but that's expensive and would probably leave me under-geared on the flat.

I'll need new levers to do this (the R785 are single port) so I'll save it for another year when there might be better bars available anyway. But thanks for the info.

I've run a 28T SRAM cassette with 10spd Shimano before, perhaps they have a 32T that will work with 10spd. This?
-

That's DA lever? I have the R785 levers which apparently have one port (though I've not looked).

Loaded + hilly = triple. It's not fashionable, but it works really well. I use 26-42-52 witha 12-30 and it's always useful to have that bail out gear if you're loaded.
If you really want to use 11spd you can use the inner and middle ring of a triple to cover yourself (comparison here). Do you really need a 50/11? -

Yes! Just took better pictures:

I have another bike (with a triple) for 'very loaded'.
I was thinking more 'bar-bag/saddlebag' kind of loaded

I'd love a Sugino OX601D for exactly that kind of thing, but £££. I think the sub-compact crankset idea is really useful but there's so little available. I think the choice is Sugino, Praxis (down to 30T with their special rings), Middleburn and a particular modular FSA crankset.

Nope. You can use the Y connector to connect both levers to the bar end junction box and then run the long cable from bar end junction box to junction B. The cable comes in sizes up to 1600mm which is plenty.

MTB cranks?

But then you feel like a duck! I'd just go with the inner and middle of a triple tbh.
-
• #5918
Oh yeah. That's probably why I had that Y connector in my list in the first place!
Still not super keen on drilling bars but it could definitely work.

now that's a flap

Ha! I might get around to trimming that down this week.

Can I run a 32 with a a standard medium cage 6800 Di2 rear mech?
Gone and fitted a 52/36 up front and fear I'll wreck my knees in the mountains.

Can I run a 32 with a a standard medium cage 6800 Di2 rear mech?
Depends on chainstay length, but I run 32T with a Compact and the Short cage.
-
• #5923
Would a bike with shorter chainstays need a longer or shorter cage?
To do this I bought the 1100mm cable and the new junction box then repurposed the 2x 50mm cables to run through bars and to new junction.
