PF86 is for 24mm spindles so you want GXP, not BB30.

Or a mole grip.

After a bit of saving I think I’m finally ready to commit to buying a disc group.
It’ll be a keeper so my heart says Di2 hydro with R785 shifters. My head says hydro + cables.
A quick google says that’ll be a grand
I haven’t migrated my bikes across to my new place yet so I feel guilty dropping that much after not cycling for so long.
What are peoples thoughts?
I don’t need a chainset, but would need everything else. I’m open to 2nd hand, but prices are still high. Any other smart tricks?
Sterling tanking is making me think I should wait for a bounce, but I’d like to link up my ducks now.
Cheers.

Get some TRP Hylex levers and brakes and convert them to Di2? I'm not sure if it's cheaper or not though, once you factor in the Di2 bits you need plus the TRP conversion kit.
I've been running the R785 cable levers for over 2 years and think they are superb. Would recommend them.

R785 cable levers
Is that the RS685?
I think I'd prefer to stick to one system, and as you said I don't know how much I'd actually save.
The more I look at the cost the more I think di2 is a bit more than I can conscionably spend.

Not sure what happened to their flat mount set...

Yes, sorry get the model numbers confused all the time, it is the RS685.

Cheers.
I guess next thing is to weigh up 105 costs vs Ultegra.
-
• #5535
The 105 levers look shit
-
• #5536
I rock 105 on my training bike. Does the job nicely.

Function > Form

Oh, saying that, I had Ultegra levers from the old bike so I've never owned 105 levers :P

I picked my R685 levers and calipers up from Mantel for incredibly cheap on black friday - I'd wait until then and see if there's a repeat deal or maybe something similar at another shop.

Any ideas if you buy RS685s now is there still a chance you'd get the early ones with the 'baggy' hood rubber - or has that long since been resolved and largely out of circulation? (I gather you may not find out until you've stretched them for fitting which would make them a pain to return..)

For what it's worth I got baggy hood model which got worse after the 2nd bleed (and complained about it on disc brake thread), emailed mantel and they were very helpful, asked for a pic and then sent me out warranty replacement hoods that have been fine so far.
-

The set I got from Evans a couple of weeks ago don't appear to be baggy.
-
• #5543
Thanks both. From what I gather, fitting the replacement hoods involves a full brake re-installation?
-
• #5544
Not at all
The old ones just get pulled off. Slide the new ones on using alocohol gel- like the handcleaner stuff (just don't use one that also includes a moisturiser).
-
• #5545
Ah, thank you that's good news.*
*although I'm not sure the guys at singletrackworld, who seem to have taken their entire bikes apart to fit them, would be too pleased to hear it!
-
• #5546
Nah, I was worried this would be the case but it turns out my little brother is stronger than me and was able to pull the new one over the brake lever and on (without stretching it!). I cut the old one off, couldn't manage to get it off over the front but didn't intend to use it again...
-
• #5547
Just use a alcohol gel handcleaner to help it slid into position, the alcohol evaporates and then the new hood is safely in place.
-
• #5548
Good tip, I will do if I have to replace them again, but hopefully these ones won't end up baggy...
-
• #5549
Just drink the gel handcleaner and you won't give a fuck about how tight your rubber grips fit...

Think he's talking about the Rs505.
Ta. Believe it is SRAM. Fingers crossed. BSA is best.
