"You only got 3, protect them!"
I've just checked and I don't have three of anything.

Dude just get that cheap Spa cycles chainset and a Shimano UN55, you're way overthinking this.
-
• #4635
Yep thats plan B if nothing comes .. I saw 5700 compact crankset for £74.99 somewhere; can I get rid of 50t and just use 34t?
-
• #4636
34t will be very spinny, minimum would be 38t (and even that is still quite spinny).
It's a commuter for your girlfriend, you're way overthinking this.

Just weighing the options. Claris RD and R400 8 speed shifters work fine?
-
• #4638
Yes, but keep looking around, like this Sora derailleur for £15.
You don't need all of them to be 8 speed specific.
-
• #4639
9 speed RD and 8 speed shifters though .. Claris is £12.50
-
• #4640
It doesn't matter, they will work in the end.
£12.50 is cheaper, go for it.
-
• #4641
If she riding flat bar, and just need the single shifter, this would be worth checking out.
-
• #4642
The Sunrace one is much cheaper.
Just by a fiver.
Think I'll stick with shimano for that. -

Drop bar and tektro RRL; Hylex was too large for her hands unfortunately.
-
• #4645
Where can she try it? Evans had arkose with hylex where she tried it and condor had CX bike with RRL. She found RRL better than her current Sram S500 levers with reach nut all the way in ..
-
• #4647
Should I just get that instead of RRL then? Cheaper too. What she liked about RRL was the bend in the upper part of the lever; looks like the junior ones would be similar:
