  • Merlin have deals at the moment. never dealt with them myself

I use them alot for MTB stuff and am yet to find fault.

  • If we're stating the obvious:

A wink emoticon - ;) - indicates that the writer of the post is joking in some way.

Sorry, yes I missed the emoticon. Not trying to make any kind of deal about this and will openly admit to be more than a bit dopey today, had a scan this afternoon where they gave me also sorts of rubbishy and not remotely pleasureable pharmaceuticals, but I can't for the life of me see the joke, please explain ?

  • @ polybikeuser
Thanks for your input - it's much appreciated. I will heed your advice

  • I'm a Record devotee and I will not be ousted. And I've had Dura ace on a shitty Trek Madone.

  • Mechanics' quote 'Shimano wears out Campagnolo wears in'.

    You mean Campag salesman quote.

These days you'd do fine with 105 on a commuter. Ultegra if you are nodder+. DA if you are ubernodder. Campag = epic fail levers epic fail brakes epic fail bolts but the record bits LOOK nice. SRAM = no idea.

  • I would generally say go for 105. It's good quality and nice upgrade from the Tiagra gs. But you really wont need anything better than that for what you're riding. Mostly, after a certain point it becomes about weight.
I mean, I've done coming up for 3000 on tiagra without too much hassle..

Oh, and sram doesn't like the rain.

Why buy 105 when for hardly anymore money you can get the 08 Ultegra SL / Ultegra which is unchanged for 09 unless of course you seperatley want a black grouppo.

    Italian engineering V. japanese?

i know what my heart tells me, and what my head tells me!

interesting thread, btw, some great advice.

  • That grouppo is supposed to be pretty good. It does seem to be missing a front mech though???

Well, joke's a bit semantically askew, but it was sort of taking the Campag hierarchy of a previous post, and willfully trying to confuse some people by replacing it with a Campag 'rebadged same level of hierarchy' selection, whilst at the same time offering those in the know a chance to feel even more in the know.

    i.e. it was wank.

Yeah, could'nt find a pic of the front mech at mo. I like the hoods, but with Campy moving towards Shimano (in terms of size and shape) and vice versa, and these seeming to be a hybrid of the two. Is'nt the amount of chioce actually decreasing instead of increasing. Just a thought.

    Get a room, you two

  • Thanks for the advice all.
I'll do some more research, but i'll be giving 105, Centaur Alloy and Rival test runs before making any decisions.

    @thetelefolorist
Is there a reason SRAM doesn't do well in the wet?

  • Oh, and sram doesn't like the rain.

I rode mine London to Lands End, mostly in driving rain, and they functioned absolutely fine, so can't comment on others experiences, but I've had no problems. Mavic Mektronics on the other hand REALLY hate the rain :)

  • just dug this up...all I know is that two of my co workers had the sram system, one of them had red, and whenever it rained, mind you in somerset this involves a load of shit all over the road, they ended up having to re index things and just generally fiddle more than the other guys on shimano.

It'll be interesting to see how the new electronic dura ace holds up over time in the wet....

  • Anyone know which groupset have the stiffest cranks... 105 or Rival?

  • Anyone know which groupset have the stiffest cranks... 105 or Rival?

i would say the new rival cranks are stiffer from what i've been reading about them.

  • go rival

  • The way you hear people talk about crank stiffness, and improvements in crank stiffness, you'd think we were all riding cranks made out of spaghetti 15 years ago.

  • if you swap between square taper and external BB the difference is immediately obvious as soon as you stomp on the pedals. you don't notice the lack of stiffness until you ride a modern set that are really stiff.
