Which Groupset?

  • This is a quite old article about Campagnolo vs the rest of the world, but I found it very good and balanced: http://www.bicycling.com/news/featured-stories/italian-job

    Thanks for this. Excellent read.

  • It's not unfortunately, otherwise I would. Then again, I'll be buying new wheels for it so it's always a possibility.

  • Why not campagnolo centaur? Looks a fuck load better.

  • Want the ability to use parts from one bike on another, don't want to mix groupset types etcetc.

  • Ah. Fair enough. Nothing wrong with 105 from what my mates that ride it have said.

  • Put 105 on the winter bike and Force on the summer bike.

    Obvs.

  • Yeah but the Force is in pretty run down condition. Not so obvs. If I was to do that I'd buy Tiagra for the Surly. But again, isn't a bad option.

  • What's run down? Replace consumables (cables, rings, etc).

  • More that the shifters are all scratched. Mostly cosmetic, but the jockey wheels could do with replacing. It's all doable, I just like shiny new stuff ;-)

  • Ultegra vs 105?

I'd get neither and opt for the new 11sp Ultegra. 11sp is forward compatible for a good while yet, 10sp is on the wane.

  • are we talking hope or CK rear hub?

  • 105 on a BMC Pro Machine...

  • Difference between 105 and Ultegra is pretty small to tell, they both shift and do it well.

    105 with Tiagra part.

  • Difference between 105 and Ultegra is pretty small to tell, they both shift and do it well.

    This I agree with

    105 with Tiagra part.

This I dont for the BMC

  • Get 11spd ultegra if your rear wheel is compatible.

    But this.

Your BMC is a summer bike, go the whole way by going for part you'd definitely want on the stainless steel bike.

  • If its CK wheels you can get 11sp conversion kit, not cheap but if put in perspective of 11 speed upgrade and 6800 being a bargain totally worth it

  • I thought the CK classic hubs can't be upgraded to 11spd. Which hubs do you have Jake?

  • This I dont for the BMC

You got Di2 on a touring bike uh may, shut up.

  • Ameys opinions on bike building are to be taken with a heart attack-inducing amount of salt

  • Jake, there's nothing to say that you can't mix and match - if I was doing it on a budget and wanted sram or shimano I would spend money on the mechs (force / ultegra) and brakes if you go shimano.

Seeing as shifters are the most expensive component, your best bet might be second hand 6700 ones. Collecting parts slower is always cheaper

  • I don't think the choice is between 105 and Ultegra 6700 because the price difference is real enough.

The choice is between Ultegra 6800 and Force 22 - both 11 speed and both about 40% off rrp right now.

I'd buy Force 22 and sell the brakes, use the brakes from your Pacer on the BMC and buy some cheap/decent second hand brakes for the Pacer. You'd come out with Force for roughly the same price of 6800.

  • Does no one here read what people write?
His wheels are 10 speed and are lovely ck hubs to ardennes rims- 11 spd conversion is expensive. Also - why would you want different speed systems on different bikes?

  • But lfgss is a place to espouse ill informed opinion rather than useful help.

  • Quite.
