  • This is not RnR but sage advice. Mine broke on the ride to the Olympic road race and the spare was at home.

  • ^Here you go young man, I'm off to tape some spare spokes to my chainstays

    Lol. Already got one ;)

Do you think a Carradice will negate my aeros?

  • The hanger thing I remember from an article about "things to pack for an Etape" and a list of small un-obtainable parts people have had fail catastrophically whilst unpacking/building bikes the night before meaning their year of training was fuxxed.

Proprietary spokes and bolts on seatpost collars were other candidates.

  • I promised myself that I wasn't going to buy another frame with internal cabling or a proprietary seat collar..

    .. that went well.

  • When you buy a bike/frame, get a couple of spare hangers if they are removable.

I even keep one in my saddlebag on my commuter.

  • Do you carry a spare mech too?

  • Not a far cry from carrying a flare gun.

  • Hey, last winter when Charge's choice of shitty YBN chain snapped in the middle of Bricklayers Arms roundabout I was safe in the knowledge my folding chaintool and quicklink was going to get me home. I am a fucking PROmuter.

  • In that situation I throw my bike under a bus and get a cab, claiming it all on insurance.

  • I was smug the other day when my chain tool and quicklink got me out of trouble when I bent a chainlink falling off in a big patch of roundabout oil last week on the way out to Kent.

When I say smug, I mean that I was cold, bleeding and covered in oil. Good times.

  • First time I took the epic adventuring fatbike out. The chain snapped 10 meters down the road. Carried it into the workroom. fixed it (badly), made it 20m, carried it into the workroom, and selected a different bike.

All my epic adventures will involve doing laps of my house I think.

  • ^ & ^^ chaintools are much better for when you're fixing other peoples problems

  • Does anyone else have SRAM RED 22 yet? I'm adjusting the reach on my shifters and either a) the right hand brake lever won't come in as far as the left OR b) the right shift lever adjusts much further in than the left side...

Quicklinks on all the things. Feck what campagnolo say. If they'd seen me break and join a chain they'd understand.

didn't you take your passport to go camping?

  • So in essence, buy what you want, it'll all be totally fine?

  • Shimano isnt rebuildable. Brake it bin it. Campagnolo is only rebuildable with delicate artists fingers and a selection of extremely rare tools.

But the consensus seems to be tha you wont die. Which is nice.

    Grab the 105 triple or....

  • But that shifts like an Alfa ca. 83 when I tested it the other week?

Looking forward to testing Chorus. Is it any different? Fingers crossed that the cassette will fit on my wheels with the Hope free hub. As I was told today it would.

  • didn't you take your passport to go camping?

Only if I'm going out of the country.

  • I'm going to order a 52/38 chainring set. If 52/36 is semi-compact, and 53/39 is classic. I guess that must be semi-classic?

  • Something so classic it's got teeth missing

  • losing 1t from both rings will make f-all difference. IMHO 52-36 is pretty much perfect, but I happily run 50-34 on the Rourke and 53-39 on the BMC

  • I'll have a "spare" pair of 52/36 Praxis rings as with the SRM gone I'm back to a 130 bcd spider and these are 110.

So if anyone wants to have a go with them, and has a compact spider, let me know.

I will want them back when I an afford a new power meter.

Well I'm using 110 bcd, and coming from 50/34. So its teeth added really.

I agree 52/36 looks like a good solution. But I'd need a climbing cassette once I move from my 34t for when I am in the mountains. (12-27 for a 36t, or 12-29 for 38t). So figured the 38 is more useful.

Saw a 55/38 set. I cant believe that shifts well. But 55T sounds like a good 'drafting cars along strava segments' ring size.

  • TT gearing.

On a seperate note: I can't find a thread about stems anywhere - I'm after a negative rise stem for a new build, but most manufacturers only do +/- 7deg or +/- 17/20 deg.
I think I need something in between - does anyone have any suggestions other than Thompson?
