  • i've seen lots of chain cleaners like these http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/LifeLine_Chain_Cleaning_Kit/5360024028/ for geared bikes. just wondering if anyone knows of a similar tool that'll work without a derailleur.

  • ???

that will work with any bike.

  • i knew that'd be the first response. i have a voucher for wiggle though and i can't think of anything i really want/need at the moment so i'm just looking for something to spend my money on.

  • White spirit isn't good for paintwork so you can only really use it of you remove the chain from the bike. Also, it's pretty damaging environmentally so a citrus based degreaser like Finish Line is better.

I've only tried a Park Tool chain cleaner on a fixed drive train and it really doesn't work. I just remove the chain and soak it in degreaser now.

  • citrus based degreaser... just remove the chain and soak it

    +1

  • Park Tools works for me. But I now clean my chain like the keirin racers in that you tube video which I cannot find right now. I also get decent results with Fairy.

  • i cleaned my chain with wd40 the other day and it seemed to work fine -
put it in a jam jar and shook, then took it out and cleaned with kitchen paper..

  • oh no!!!!

    i will re-lubricate asap

    thanks rosmal

  • I used WD-40 today for cleaning but then lubed up afterwards. It's rubbish compared to getting the chain of and giving it a good swirl/brush in isopropyl alcohol.

  • If you're going to use white spirit, put it into a big jar to clean the chain, and once you've taken the chain out you can leave the muck to settle before decanting the white spirit to a new container for reuse..

  • ha ha !

I use one like this on a fixed gear bike, just turn the bike upside down so the wheel can turn. the kierin cleaning method (video somewhere on this forum) is good for the cog/chainring teeth.

  • Are you able to get the type of lube which new chains are coated in anywhere? The sort of sticky, yet amazing stuff which lasts a good while.

  • see above

  • ...no

  • I use a natural, soy-based degreaser every so often.
take the chain off. scrub with a toothbrush & the degreaser.
    and relube with pedros chainj

    degreaser I use: http://web.mac.com/eldukedegreaser/El_Duke_Degreaser_/Home.html

  • Based on this post from Cyclingtipsblog.com I rather sceptically had a go at my filthy chain and drivetrain with a some babywipes.

And our survey says "they are amazing"

Wiped over the rest of the bike and all the road gunk, brake dust, oil etc. just glides off. No nasty aerosols, no degreaser dripping all over the place and flushing into the sewage system and they cost next to nothing.

Can't believe they can be any good for your skin if they can do that to a dirty bike.

    Good call.

Actually using ASDA smart price wet wipes. Bike is now super clean.

  • This stuff is fucking good for nappy rash

  • Baby wipes FTW! I use these most of the time, cheap as chips...

Cool method, has anyone tried it on geared bikes? Think I'll have a go, looks like a good way to clear the lumpy gunk that gathers on sprockets and chainrings.

  • Baby wipes are pretty environmentally unfriendly though, providing yet more waste to go into landfill.
