  • Super has a 5 bar gate and two left feet.. this could be tough

    eh?

  • I've never seen the appeal of running but just had a sudden urge to start today. Tomorrow I'm gonna start running around clissold park... in air max 1s. If its fun, I'll order some asics.

Cycling 20 miles a day for work but just feel I could do with a proper workout. Cant afford climbing membership at the moment either.

  • I've decided that my foot is "better enough" to start going running again, I am planning on this happening on Tuesday.

  • Trails full of compacted wet snow yesterday. Energy zapping, yet comfortable, and surprisingly grippy with my Roclites. Did 4km on the road leading to 10km off-road.

Great run. But I've woken up really hungry, and I cant eat untill after this afternoons medical.

    weeps

  • nice one tiswas. 10k's still a bit out of my reach at the moment but last night's 5k (almost 6 actually) round the river was the least painful one yet. i'm still hovering around 30 minutes for 5k so a long way to go if i'm going to hang on to my sub 20 minuting buddies in these upcoming triathlons.

despite the time not really tumbling yet i still feel i'm making progress, and am quietly proud of myself. condisering i'm 35 this year and had never run further than for a bus until last year and only started regular jogging in february i think i'm doing alright. have clocked up 16 runs since the start of feb.

regular running seems to be the thing that has been the clincher in me finally kicking those few lingering occasional smokes too. it's been over a week now since i last fell off the waggon and lit up at the pub. all that's required to put me off reaching for those social cigarettes now is to think back to my last run when i was spitting dust, sweating into my eyes and pretty much gasping for breath. and suddenly i don't want to smoke anymore.

  • Just got back from the first run around the park. legs/ankles hurt like a bitch. I managed to do 55 minutes of mixed running/walking but the shoe situation isn't great.

Its hard work though! You get a bit cocky cycling 20 miles a day thinking you could easily be in the sas... Running for ten minutes quickly reminds you maybe not.

Running is brutal to the body, and requires resiliance*, as well as the strength and fitness required to cycle.

    (*and really expensive shoes)

  • Speaking of expensive shoes. Want!

  • if it's your first race don't get swept up in the mad dash off the starting line either.

figure out your goal pace and stick to it. (a garmin helps in this respect)

you see a lot of people a mile or two out from the start often start dropping back because they got all super competitive and raced off at the beginning to try and pass as many people as they could, they then end up having to run the rest of the race feeling knackered which is fucking awful.

Just noticed this post. Spot on.

I tend to start out slow and spend the race overtaking people. I'm sure I could run the same time by starting fast, and spending the race being overtaken. But that sounds shite.

  • Just ordered these... Quite liking this running lark (not the gash trainers though)

  • I've just taken the dive. I really needed an activity to get me up and out of the house in the mornings. Being a useless student bellend, the idea of an education clearly isn't enough.

So I've gone and got my feet looked at, and my gait recorded and all that stuff. Got me some shoes.

Now I've got to fucking go and run in 'em ain't I?

  • what trainers dya get? come on come on spill the beans.

I got some new Nikeeee free runners,

I used to be bothered about children working in sweat shops for a dollar a day, didnt wear Nike for a coupla decades,
then I htfu and realised that we all live our lives at the expense of the third world anyway,

Feet on the ground, mind in the stratosphere, as they used to say

  • another 3k, quite liking this running thing

  • another 3k, quite liking this running thing

    so, based on that ^

i've now done 3k once a week for a month, gonna do one or two more and then move up to 5k. Does that sound sensible to you running lot?

  • i have no goal. i just quite enjoy running

  • intervals? really? can't i just slog out 5k instead?

(why i asked is to check if I'm ramping things up too soon. messed my knees up cycling, really really don't want to mess them up again running)

  • ah ha. a good argument that.

    intervals then!

  • ^ there's a big difference between 1 relatively short weekly run of 5k and the sort of constant grind of training leading to overtraining.

Intervals early on may lead to injury also.

Increasing from 3km to 5km seems completely sensible to me, in this case. If it is going to feel like a real struggle to step up, then do it gradually over a month - e.g. 3.5km, 4km, 4.5km, bingo.

If you're finding it boring, pick a new route, run with company, ask yourself if running is really for you, or just htfu.

  • i just like my vacant mind when i run, it's very different from when i cycle.

when i cycle i'm always going through events, singing a song or talking to myself, my head is constantly churning through stuff.

running though, it's dead empty. very nice

  • I'm not convinced intevals are nessercary, unless you want to gain speed. Just be a bit careful not to ingnore niggles, and to warm up/ down.

My 2p. Start tagging distance on. I'd be tempted to add 500m per run. The idea being that you still run the first 3k (or 3.5k, 4k etc) at your usual pace, and take the added on 500 as a brucey bounus, and allow youself to slow a little. Even add a walk if you feel the need. As long as you've done the original distance at pace, you can still feel good about yourself.

TBH once you get comfortable at 5k. Your a runner, and your body will cope with the most. At this point its simple. Add distance for strength and endurance. Add intevals for speed. (IMHO)

BTW Well done, and keep it up.

  • i'm going running with my boss at lunchtime. how gay is that?

  • what i do now is walk home from work, about 4k, then stretch properly, then run the 3k, so i'm already covering quite a lot of ground.

Might start adding 500m each time instead, sounds more reasonable. really keen on cracking 5k though, magic limit innit

  • You're suggesting that my casual absorption of random snippets of information is in any way inaccurate?

    How dare you, Sir.

    The nerve.

    flounce

my casual absorption of random snippets of information is bigger than yours :P

@k boy - other thing to think about could be form drills. there's lots of skipping, hoping, bouncing, striding, lunging, bounding, and even mincing that when done whilst focusing on correct posture can help you to become a better runner...

    This^

Personally I always find I can run further, if I've been doing a decent amount of stability training (stomache and lower back stuff).
