  • Ones with stripes are definitely faster.

  • While hats will be faster if there are Tunnocks Teacakes at the finishing line. I would be faster if they were at the starting line.

  • It's no wonder you're not allowed a vote, Bruce...

  • Saucony virrata. Try them Neil. They're fuxking excellent

  • It's been well-known for decades that each additional 50g on a shoe requires 1% more aerobic function for the same speed, and the gains do not magically level off as you imply.

  • Manufacturers who label one running shoe as faster than another are lying.

    Red shoes are faster.

    FACT.

  • Fuck, mine are yellow.

  • well-known for decades

A systematic review should be a piece of piss to come by then.

  • Yes. They have zero cushioning or stability, as the blurb says.

  • Ran a 20 something 5k, clearly with better shoes that would have been in the 19's

  • Not sure how quantifiable the difference is, but fwiw, I do short stuff in Noosas, but anything longer than 50 miles in GT2000s.

  • I have heard numbers broadly in line with this but I don't have the reference to hand. I think it was a single trial rather than a meta analysis of several.

I know I feel faster with racing flats on than with trainers.

  • Well, this morning's highly scientific datum is that running barefoot in a park where the horse chestnuts have been falling in large quantities requires some care and attention.

  • The chap who I chased round the park this morning was wearing Vibram-Fivefingers, there was no overt horse chestnut avoidance but he might just have been very subtle.

  • Rare Saturday off allowed me to Parkrun (in my GT2000's fwiw). No measuring gizmos I ran appx 18.30 (next finisher clocked 18.40) exact time tbc. Got the number 1 token too, which was a nice surprise.

Doubt I'd have been much quicker in DS trainer, my usual 10k and under trainer.

Followed up with cafe, then swings and slides with family, a very nice morning out.

  • Ah, by barefoot I do mean nothing on my feet.

  • Lighter racing trainers are definitely faster... I like the psychological effect of knowing I am racing when I put them on.

Had to cut this mornings run short due to sore thighs after a 2 pb week. I followed up the GNR with a 16:10 5000m on Thursday evening at our club championships. The final race of the evening was won by an England athlete in 14:40.00, on his shoulder was an U17 in 14:40:04. Brilliant racing.

  • We have his n hers packs for the yorkshire marathon if anyone wants? We decided to go climbing in Malta instead of marathon running for our honeymoon. Think we made the right choice. First name is printed on the number so will have to pretend to be an Ed or Liz for the day. Well aware swapping numbers is prohibited, it's up to you, better that someone has them than the places go to waste etc etc...

Yours in return for a forum donation at your discretion. Pick up in Muswell Hill evenings or Liverpool st during the week. pm if interested.

  • To add to the shoe chat, I did 13km on hampstead Heath today in cross country spikes, and it was magnificent.

  • Chap in the Asics shop recco'd DS Racers- I agreed at once as they are red. 19.XX time in the fucking bag.

  • Asics shop? Heaven.

Runners Need (my LRS) happened to have 20% off OMM bags in store today, so I bought the Adventure Light 20 I've been eyeing up for ages. Looking forwards to Weds run commute now without fear of zip splitting.

  • 4.02 marathon at the end of IM Wales yesterday with lots of walking, changing shoes at 10k, off the back of not running more than 16 miles in one go this year...

It has led me to wonder two things, one how fast could I go at the moment when fresh and secondly how I ran a 4.45 as my first marathon 3 years ago!

I have a bit more faith in the marathon plans which don't prescribe 20+ mile runs..

  • How was the swim? I hear that ~100 or so DNF'd that due to the conditions?

  • Also - Dat transition!

  • I know that 52 people were pulled from the swim, but there were a large number who walked away before or didn't make the cut off as well.

Nearly 25% of the field dnf'd in total...

It was hard going, but given that I haven't swum in the sea at all during training not impossible if you've done enough training (and get a little lucky not getting kicked to death in the mele)
