  • I went for a run this morning. I did a parkrun in the middle of it. All good clean fun. I recorded it on Strava so that I had some idea of how far I went and what speed I went at.

    Northumberland fells tomorrow.

  • Didn't we have the technology argument about a month or two ago anyway?

  • Why can't we all just get along?

  • Why are mummy and daddy fighting?

  • Didn't we have the technology argument about a month or two ago anyway?

yes. but there is always time for more...

  • Why are mummy and daddy fighting?

Because mummy's Garmin says she averaged 10:20 but daddy's iPhone has it at 10:05.

  • I've kept a training log for 6 years which records distance and time for every run, so am a user of technology for running purposes, historcally stopwatch hrm & gmaps. Despite my Feb-ish anti current tech rant I decided to give Strava a go in March so I could comment as a user.

In summary Strava has some uses but also annoyances. I couldn't give a fuck if I was 3rd or 333rd fastest strava user past the local newsagents and chippy, but a 1 mile known loop trained on by local club racers could perhaps be a useful benchmark for comparing recent form against others I guess. This would be no substitute for a race against them. I'm not at the sharp end of things here or able to commit to serious training so not really relevant to my training or goals to compare in this way though.

For me it has been useful for measuring a few route distances on the go and timing my weekly commute runs (the latter with rucksack so won't rely on it being cold enough to wear jacket or gilet with pockets so may continue through the summer).

I recorded last weeks park run, it came up 0.1 mile short (tho others were on 5k exactly) and I was apparently 7 seconds quicker than my parkrun time even though I started recording well before the run started and stopped it about 30s after I'd been through the finish funnel.

"Suffer score" can get to fuck, what a crock of willy waving bullshit that is.

Personally I'd feel concerned if I couldn't be motivated to run unless I was gathering data (or listening to music for that matter, but thats a different rant), but if it's what works for others then I won't lose sleep over that.

P.s. I once ran a 5 mile race in a gorilla suit with rough fibre backing, the chafing was insane, esp on the thighs. Do not recommend.

  • tl;dr Run measuring tech can & does help but I can live without it if needed.

  • I've just kicked off Operation Make Running More Fun. It doesn't involve any technology but it does involve a labradoodle.

    Best technology ever!
I miss running with Rudy, great companions.

@HB- I'm only slightly against exercise tech- mostly because of laziness, and partially because when I have it on me I feel like I'm on a treadmill, or an exercise bike- which is why I have a love/hate relationship with my Garmin. I also can find it incredibly demotivating, as I don't have the mindset to push myself harder when I start seeing the pace drop- it really gets to me. I just found that video amusing.

  • Just been running around Greenham common- beautiful area. I didn't have my Garmin so stopped just short of a half marathon.

If I'd known the distance I'd have run the last little bit, but hey-ho, it was fun anyway.

    Headphones?

  • ^ I think if you tried to plug headphones in to a dog you'd face some serious opposition.

  • Doesn't sound fare, somehow.

  • Didn't we have the technology argument about a month or two ago anyway?

Meh. I'm running half marathon distances barefoot these days but I don't strava for anything so it doesn't materialise for this crowd.

  • ^Lies, he has no proof.

  • in a sport that's already pretty smug, it's pretty fucking smug to stand there and tell someone else that they're enjoying something wrong.

The only thing I hate more than evangelical tech users are evangelical Luddites. TL:DR - we don't care about what you like.

  • do what you like, only you know how it feels, what the chimp does,
if it feels good do it. if you win prizes and mates congratulate you even better

  • I love technology, its the future and all that.

My favourite race of the year yesterday, 20 miles of hilly trail running around bits of the Ridgeway and stuff. Knocked 6 minutes off my previous best, and finished 4th. Good day all in all.

  • Now I remember why I never used to go running as a kid, it's too damn hot! 1 mile felt like 8, had to cut it short. Air is mad fresh though.

  • 14 miles of running in my new shoes along the same trails as Thursday, a lot slower today partly because my quads are still sore as shit and going downwards hurts, and partly because I was running with a friend who only really runs on the flat so the hills were a novelty and challenge!

22.5km, 1330m of climbing and enough calories to justify a few pints of HSD.

  • Run home from work exploring different route through town, with tailwind, less cars (exhaust fumes) and carrying less than usual = fun.

  • Yeah was a good day today by all accounts. Thanks fullly.
My ex won the Guernsey 4 day weekend. Just sayin. #stillheroine
