  • It's all in the book, Neil.

    I shall get reading.

  • Glad I've found this thread, tonights reading sorted.

Stupidly just signed up to do Leeds half marathon in May.

I haven't run for about 2 years and am very overweight. This is going to be a challenge (:

Good luck Mate, just be warned that it's highly addictive.

  • Thanks. I'm excited like a kid at christmas!

Read alot in this thread about people how they wouldn't bother if they were going to run a slow time etc. For me I just want the challenge. If it goes well will be looking for a full one around the end of summer, or a decent length duathlon.

  • First run since shin splints developed, made myself do only one lap of the park.

    Extremely frustrating!

Anything I can do to hasten the disapearance of the shin pain?

  • Anti inflammatories
    Tape
    Stretch

    Have you got proper shoes?

  • Istretch, I have proper shoes, what is this taping?

  • I used to tape my right one, but not as technically as in that vid... Just wrapped the whole of my lower leg.

  • That link does not work for me.

Would the compression socks of which I have heard do the same thing without pulling all my hair out?

  • Im not sure mate.... Im probably no qualified to give advice other than I used to get some pain.

Tubigrips are very underrated for muscle pain.

  • Compression socks good, rest is better.

Stop pretending you don't shave your legs...

  • You need to establish root cause then overcome this.

Taping or compressing the injury is just masking (excuse the pun) symptoms and storing up trouble for down the line.

This (treating the symptom not the cause) had occurred to me.

I think the cause is that I overdid it, but how long do I have to wait to be able to go back to running?

  • Yeah, sorry if it sounded patronising!

There's a number of strengthening activites (and useful background info) listed here:

    http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/shin-splints-lower-leg-strengthening-exercises-for-prevention-and-treatment-479

You would benefit from doing them, but doing them correctly, so best to get some professional help (e.g. run coach, physio) to make sure your form is correct when doing these.

  • I can confirm this evening that 'helping out' eating a kilo of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrero_Rocher alongside a five mile (guilt) run - can result in the last mile being achieved at break-neck speed due to requirement for a 'comfort stop'. That's all I'm saying at this stage.

  • A bit more inspiration.

Andrew was one of the doctors who looked after us on the Al-Andalus Ultra in Spain last summer. A totally top bloke. Hopefully he'll be on duty again this year, he did threaten to actually enter the race instead...

  • plodded round five ovals tonight (couldn't be arsed to strike out anywhere as it was freezing my calves were massively stiff for some reason so i didn't want to stray far from home). guess that's somewhere around the 3k mark. seems to be getting easier, more natural and enjoyable after three weeks of one gentle, steadily increasing run a week. stretched for at least half an hour afterwards which seems to have loosened up the calves a bit. easy day of cycling and swimming planned for tomorrow then i think i'm going to go for my first 5k on wednesday. feels good. now i just have to keep off the fags and get this road bike built up and i'll be able to start putting my first triathlon together. progress!

  • keep it up dooks, those first few k are the hardest to get done, once you're past them the rest you just need to keep running and tacking a bit on the end as you go, you'll not find that it gets much harder then until you hit the long distances.

I found a good way to keep it up was to sign up for a few 5k races locally to give me something to train for. also running at a race is nothing like running on your own and you might find you can push yourself a lot further already than you can manage when it's just you and your thoughts to keep you company.

  • Yep I've got the running bug now...Two weeks in an up to a pain free 6km at a moderate pace. I'm not going to up it too much/at all in case I overdo it...

  • ^^ good call on 5km races.

There are loads that are popular, free, and locally found via parkrun or openathletics websites.

  • Check out the link below to find local events dooks. The beautiful thing about running in the UK is the shear number of events and runners. I truly miss it.

  • My carlves a currently fecked. I do a Sunday run of about 16 Km. At around 13 Km there's a 418 step climb up a mountain, the top half of which I have to walk. This Sunday some guy was running up behind me and I decided to challenge myself to stay infront. Nearly had a heart attack at the top. But continued running the last 3 Km.

I have now been deeply afraid of steps all week.
