wierd eventless weekend so cold swim and sauna did it for me.

  • Running cap.

I love running caps. That or X-socks

    This, anything made by x-bionic!

  • ^^ they do, hydrocolid dressing from boots should cover it, but if you're on holiday just put your feet up for a couple of days and be brought iced aneathestics

  • r.e shopping gifts
    buff headgear. cant lose.

  • On the kit front, does anyone have any recommendations for good goretex (or similar) waterproofs (with taped seams)?

The TP100 says I need one as compulsory kit and mine isn't really up to scratch. Ideally it would be as small and light as possible and comfortable to wear under my Raidlight Olmo 5. Also probably include a foldaway hood.

Anything that's on the compulsory kit list is generally unnecessary. It's summat to make sure you have, but to give to your crew after kit-check, if there is one.

I bought my GF one of these, but she's never used it. I borrowed it on Saturday for Parkrun and it was great. I did look a bit of a nob, but then I can't pin the blame 100% on my headwear choices...

  • thats cos it was the pink one, with flower pattern ;)
theres thousands of types out there,

  • I've got about 2 dozen buffs, keep getting in goodie bags them at races. Got a nice pink one in SA. Unfortunately, living in the UK, it's never cold enough to wear them.

    Incorrect.

    This^

I'm a gear junky in all my hobbies. But even I struggle to need much for running.

    Trainers.
    Proper running socks.
    Lycra shorts + T-shirt.
Lose shorts + vest to cover lycra.

I find cheapo compression gear off ebay works great for the lycra under layer. Doesnt actually do much compressing, but the fit is there.

  • Got roped into signing up for the Dalsnibbe duathlon (you know who you are).

Plan to lose weight, run further, and do 7km laps around my house, which include a steep 1km climb. After a days skiing with the kids, thighs throbbing from constantly having to slow the insane 3 year old. Last night I decided to get started. Stupid idea. Legs where rubbish.

Training for this is gonna suck.

  • I need more kit. I only have one pair of tights and have run in them for the past 2 weeks. They reek nasty.

  • Have you considered washing them?

Even synthetics breath and insulate notably better when clean.

I love my thermal Skins tights. But like all my skins gear, they dont leave much to the imagination.

I have brushed lycra undershorts for rugby. These work pretty well with some brushed lycra cycling leg warmers, if you dont want to invest in more tights.

The cheap compression gear I use is Emfraa. Dont have their tights though.

  • Have you considered washing them?

Yeah, but my rare days off from running haven't coincided with laundry days and I'm not running in wet tights.

  • What always gets me. Is minging gear need'nt smell bad untill its been warmed up and moistened again. I'm constantly wondering whether the warmth my neck buff is providing is worth the eye watering smell.

  • FAAARK...

Just been comparing my running data between this year and last and suddenly feeling a whole lot less confident. I've always known my miles have been much lower than last year, and this year I've also been running slower. However, I've consoled myself (until now) that at least I haven't injured myself - In fact it turns out that this week last year WAS the week I injured myself.

I've not done today's run yet because my ankles developed a weird clicking after the 80km weekend (I think in the achilles just below the calf) but suddenly I'm seeing visions of injuring myself a month before the race AGAIN!

  • ^ Fingers crossed its not serious

Not been able to do any training for 2+ weeks due to injury, got first marathon in 2 months, so far I've managed exactly 1 long run. Ragghhh.

  • Graphs:

    :-(

  • While you're at it, I would value any advice about taping up a shoulder with an AC disruption; cycling with it is easy but running is going to shake it about a b it. Also how best to modify breathing technique to cope with a fractured rib. Going to run, no question about it, only issue is how.

So I taped up the shoulder and banged out 6k at lunchtime. 27 minutes, or 7mins 18 seconds per mile. Nothing to boast about but I´ll settle for it in my current condition. Shoulder fine, rib not tearing hole in lung.

  • Thanks for all the gift suggestions. Currently looking at Dammit's foot pod suggestion.

  • following on from Rich's post - new running shoes fit well but are a little sore in the right arch. Any recommendations for better footbeds?

i'd try different socks as a first port of call.

really recommend x-socks, any variant is fine.

much more important to have decent socks than fancy footbeds.

there is an element of HTFU though, your feet will get less sensitive as time goes on...

    nutter...

    well done.

  • Am doing my first half marathon in two and a bit weeks and have been doing some 9 - 11 mile runs.

For the last few times, whenever I get to within the last mile or so, I start getting really sharp pains on the outside of my knee, and it's sometimes up in my hip too (both on my left leg). I feel totally fine all the way round and then it's like my body knows I'm near the end and gives up.

Don't have a clue what's causing it, am running with shoes reccommended for my stride from Runners Need that are only 3 months old.... any ideas / tips?
