Not had a chance to read this yet, but may be worth keeping an eye on, the bike blog can be quite interesting
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/the-running-blog/2013/feb/05/why-we-love-to-run
why are the comments sections on most sections of the internet moronic
like/ dont like polarity, this blog is not even worth scanning..... -

So, 17.5 with Kirsty this morning. She complained about how far it was just before the half-way point, which was fun. But she was really helpful on the last leg. I bonked completely at 17.5, about a half-mile from home, so we stopped the GPS and walked back as a warm-down. Bit of a disappointment, but still the furthest I've ever run. New shoes were great but are totally, totally covered in mud now.

Just been out for my run, put it of for as long as I could, mainly as my legs are tired from a 75 mile ride yesterday (http://connect.garmin.com/activity/271810477)
Second time I have done this run and without really thinking about it, managed to knock 2 minutes down. It is a flat run, but the wind was horrible on the way back, and as can be seen from my Garmin, slowed me considerably, still happy though - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/271814681

7 mile xc race today, got round in 58 something to take 1st place and won the handicap trophy for my efforts. Terrible conditions, ground was saturated pretty much the whole way round, wind and sideways rain didn't help either. First run in xc spikes which made a massive difference but couldn't do much for the ankle deep soft bits and knee deep wet bits!

16 miles in just under 2 hours today, pretty pleased with the pace, running up through Greenwich park felt like running through treacle, not helped by the chicanes they've put on the main hill to stop cyclists going down the footpath...

Finally managed to drag LadyLiz out for a run today for the first time. Had to buy her a new pair of trainers(hers are indoor only so as not to get our floor mucky) to make it happen but hopefully worth it cos I want someone to run with!
The rain prob didn't help but don't think she's overly keen on the concept so far(she works out like a demon with any other exercise), managed just shy of 4k which seems pretty good to me for a first try.
Also, wtf Nike, y u no include sensor with Nike+ enabled shoes? They cost fuck all to buy so why are they not just standard with the shoe? -

After my 10 mile run at the weekend I had the shits for 2 days, all in all a pretty horrible experience. I've heard of people having this problem during a run but not afterwards!!

^ Eugh, you poor sod. I've had the shits for an hour or so after a run when something I'd eaten in the day didn't agree with me, and it made me feel like death. Get well soon.
I've had a similar problem whilst on a run too, as you mention.... fortunately it was dark and I was going through a park... 'nuff said.

^^Do you change anything about your diet when you're going to do a longer run? Or after it? There's no definitive answer to why people get the shits while/after running, but for some people it seems to be a dietary intolerance that is triggered by their running regime.

If I eat/drink most of the major brands of energy products I get this.
Sorry to hear you do too, it sucks.
Nakd bars and water ftw for me.

AFAIK theres 3 things going on here.
1) During a run you can basically vibrate a shit out of your lower intestine. Solved for the most part by timing your eating, and emptying your intestines of as much poo as possible.
2) Sports suppliment intolerance. Never had this. But I hear its pretty common.
3) You basically drain your liver of all energy reserves. I guess this could cause you body to freak out some.
Regarding the 1st one. Could this vibration effect irritate your intestine in a way that lasts a couple of days.
Regarding the 2nd one. What are folk eating before, during, and after?
Regarding the 3rd one. Does any of those that get this suffer the same after a long bike ride?Just making guesses.

Can't see anything that would link a shortish run with 2 days of stomach troubles. Any damage done in 10 miles e.g. dehydration, bonking should have righted itself well within a day, or even a meal. My guess would be that a minor bug of some sort had been picked up beforehand, and maybe taken a foothold when the body was under the stress of running.
Of course, ianad.

Do you tend to run only after a certain period after eating? I can only run after 2-2.5hrs after a meal.

this^ pacing/ timing your digestion is key stuff. gets extreme with more serious athletes. bit like obsessionally pacing/ timing every other fucking thing they do

Straight off the frosty and hilly bike home and stright out to run up and down some of the same steep hills last night. Felt gooood.

a shortish run of 2 days
That's a sprint for you, isn't it? -

I support this hypothesis. All of the above may influence having the shits during the run or for a couple of hours after but I don't see any of them causing something that lasts for a couple of days. Hope you feel better.

Oh hi there!

The day I ran I'd only had a big bowl of cereal about 4 hours before. I only decided last minute to go out there and I didn't want to wait for the sun to go down/rain to start, so #3 makes sense and I felt pretty drained/dehydrated at various points.
I knocked back a few imodiums on Monday and haven't been since which was abolute bliss yesterday as I was in meetings all day but slightly disconcerting now.
I'm really hoping it was due to a bug as the inability to hold my liquids knackered me for a few days, but next time I will make sure I set out within a couple hours of eating and I'll also try to empty the gut a bit beforehand.

Yes this is the most likely cause.

My first Sunday run of the year. Slow but enjoyable. Stretching and using the roller was relaxing and 'ouch'. Large brunch and a snooze to follow.
