  • +1 on the cold, love the crisp autumn days and can't wait for winter

Never thought of using a messenger bag, might lend it to her and see if she likes it. My chrome can be tightened up proper good so could potentially work, even if it's on the heavy side.

  • That went better than expected: shirt, wallet, keys and phone all fitted in nicely, bag didn't move and was pretty comfortable. Plus I was free to loaf as soon as I got in - no heading back put for a run. I think I'll be doing this more often. Only problem is that trousers and shoes are at work, so I'll end up slowly moving over all my trousers and shoes to work... But logistics is a pain in the arse even if you're just cycling, no really big deal - you just know that one day, eventually, you're going to end up in a meeting wearing tiny shorts and having to explain yourself...

  • I solved the problem leaving 90% of the smart clothes in the wardrobe at the office and I change there everyday no matter what way of transportation I use.

In the list I include also shoes, belts, ties and so on. It's just easier.

  • I've just run my fastest 5k evar - 21:20. Considering the above, I'm pretty pleased with that.

Needed a boost ahead of Regent's Park 10k on Sunday. Signed up for the whole winter series but already missed the first on account of aforementioned injury.

I just checked back through my 5K times, 22:45 is my fastest, which as my target is a 45 minute 10K means going faster than my fastest 5K, for twice as long.

    This is slightly intimidating.

  • Better get running then, although if this is for your tri ambitions I think your cycling will help you out quite a bit...

I managed a 45min 10k in my one and only attempt at an Olympic and I can knock out a sub 20 and 40 minute 5 and 10k :s

  • I want to be able to rely on doing a 45 minute 10K after the swim and ride, which I suspect means being able to knock out a 40 minute 10K on its own, reliably.

  • Plus, of course, I need a Triathlon bike made by Scaled Composites with a grant from NASA.

  • I'm only 30 seconds faster running a standalone 10k than I am running off the bike.

I'll hazard a guess that I'm just not trying hard enough on the standalones.

  • 40min 10ks are the aspiration of many many club runners.
Me included, pacing is the key, getting really atuned to what you cover.
And caffeine gels, loads of caffeine gels.

  • I'd like to hit a 45 minute 10k by the end of January, and aim for a 1:35 half at the end of February (it's the Malta half, which is all downhill and probably the equivalent of a 1:40 flat half).

    Then I'll aim for a 40min 10k by June.

  • I'm confident that I could run a 40 minute 10K, the question is how much of my training time would I have to give to running, and what effect would that have on my (rubbish) swimming and (tolerable) cycling?

  • That's the problem with triathlon - trying to fit it all in.

You'll probably see most improvement, in both absolute and relative terms, in your swimming.

Cycling you can keep at a maintenance level - maybe one interval session and one mid-distance ride a week.

    There's a good programme for a sub-40 10k here.

(They have a sub-45 plan too.)

  • Doing two week blocks at the moment for training- quite good fun as you can really see the progress, then before you get bored you are onto your next sport.

I'll check out those links, see if I can work them in.

  • I'm doing a modified sub-45 plan at the moment.

It's about time I actually put some planning into my training though, as I am (or was until I became lazy) doing much the same routine week in week out.

I'll probably work on a 5 - 6 week cycle, with a 2 - 3 week build phase and a week doing not much / completely off at the end of the cycle, as I've noticed that not having enough recovery time has not helped at all.

  • I say all that, but I'll be running into and back from work tomorrow - just to get some time on my feet.

  • For many years, my 10k PB was quicker than 2x 5k PB. Mainly because I was always hungover on the Isle of Man, the only place I ever ran 5k until Park Run came along.

  • Jeez dammit, that's a perfectly respectable 5k time. Although I'm finally enjoying running I'm still ridiculously slow. You'd leave me for dead if we ran together.

I need to sign up for next season's races now really to give me something to aim at. It's all gone a bit er... aimless lately. Although my running's rapidly improving, my swimming has gone to bits and I've barely been out on the road bike since I bought it in early September. Damn cold dark evenings and weekends full of social commitments. Damn apathy.

  • We need to organise an LFGSS Christmas Triathlon to give us all something to aim for, bike leg fixed, natch.

  • Swim - Brockwell, Ride - Herne Hill, Run - Dulwich Park.

Long transitions but there you go.

  • Dammit dammit, that is a good 5k time.

Just getting back into the running now after my peak in 2010 Best 10K I managed then was 42 mins.

Trying to get 2 x 5k runs in a week. Hitting the 27 min mark at the mo, which is not epic, but they are around town.

I have quite a challenge next year, so training will ramp up in the New Year.

  • You lot are making me feel bad. Well, you would if I could be bothered to feel anything! I've not run since last Thursday and now that it's dark I am, once again, struggling to head out there in the evenings. Weekends are fine cos I run in the daylight.

I've signed up to do cross-country races with my club so those are relatively safe until the temp drops too far for me to handle. I have this problem every year so I know I'll get through it some how.

I would love this. Can we make it happen? Coffee and mince pies should be available at transitions. This could be great fun, just a really casual event. More sociable than competition.

  • In for the LFGSS duathlon. Fuck swimming.

  • Probably already in this thread somewhere, but where's best to get trainers fitted?

ps Rule 42 or whatever it is can shove it, running's fun!

  • And in for the Christmas triathlon!
