  • Good luck with the half this weekend!

Thank you very much. I'm pretty confident about finishing - not likely to set a blistering time, but it being my first means that I'll definitely get a PB...

Also going to ask about holiday for the Barcelona Marathon and see if I can keep this momentum going and nail a full 26 miles.

Of course, none of this has anything to do with my upcoming 30th birthday, oh no...

Think I'll treat myself to a watch when I book my place. If I just want simplicity, intervals and pace, which should I go for? 110 maybe?

  • I've had a 405CX for a year. Other than the bezel thing (which I barely touch while actually running) being a bit shit it's been fine. The 410 looks practically identical, what's been improved?

I have a 405CX and like it pretty well. The bezel is difficult to use when wet (either rain or sweat). Cost ~£130 a year ago

Mainly the bezel - It's no longer activated by sweat / rain - there are some additional features too, IIRC, but mainly it's the bezel being fixed.

  • So I appear to have signed up to the Barcelona Marathon. Thought I'd do it now just in case Sunday's a bit grim and I get put off. All I need to do now is put some cash aside for a nice little holiday and get my body in shape to run 26 miles in the sun without falling to bits. Can anyone recommend a good half-to-full training plan? I'll probably end up ignoring it like I did the half plan, and just doing what I can manage, but you have to start with good intentions, don't you?

  • Runners World is your friend. I've used their training plans for half and full marathons.

Take a look at this site too:

  • Just got back home, got 2:05:39. Not bad, considering I was expecting 2:15, but tantalisingly/annoyingly close to two!

  • Good work Sparky!
Back to training yesterday after a week of truly hating running.
Running in the dark is not fun.
Need to buy some warmer clothes also- its pretty bitter up here when the wind gets up.
9 Dec Marathon.... creeping up on me!

  • Well done Sparky.

Eyebrows, I'm hitting the road after work this evening so I'll let you know if I agree with the 'not fun' bit :-).

  • Had a suprisingly fun time doing the Royal Parks ultra yesterday. Not really sure of the time as I've made the decision not to bother with PB's etc. Next up is a 50 miler, just got to decide which one.

  • It wasn't too bad out there this evening. I managed one lap of Tooting Common before it got too dark then one lap of Clapham Common before calling it a night. 7.61 miles. I like.

  • Desperately trying to get a place in London, have applied through guide dogs having failed for what I think is 5 years in a row.

Spoke to their events team today and was told that the best thing to do was to write an email detailing how I will raise the money so have come up with some ideas on top of the standard just giving page, anyone else have any hints and tips.

Not too worried about raising the money as I've raised about 7k in the last 2 years for charity, hope I've got that across....

  • Bloody hell got to get some miles in the legs, got first orienteering race of season Sunday.
Only managed a 5ks recently and it seemed sloooow

I’m part of the events team at a (different) charity, and the things we look for on our marathon applications are ability to actually run the race and ability to raise the cash.

Things that work really well for our runners are quiz nights, cake sales (depending on where you work, I guess), sports tournaments (football, darts, you name it), carol singing (obvs only at xmas – takes a bit of organising as you will need a permit but people are super generous at xmas (I raised £400 in an hour last year, though they may have been paying me to stop singing)). This year we had a runner take a treadmill to his local Tesco (he knew the manager) and he ran on the treadmill for 20 miles, with his kids holding collection buckets next to him. He raised LOADS.

If there’s the possibility of matched giving from your employer then put that down too.

Good luck – Guide Dogs is a great charity and I’m sure they’ll support you lots

  • Forgot to apply for Run to the beat.

    BALLS!

    Have some rep.

So I've proposed a pop up restaurant at home, £20 for 3 courses..

A who can eat a sausage fastest race against my dog.

Auctioning a pair of guide dogs coloured trainers.

The running on a treadmill would be really easy, maybe in the foyer of work.

And matched giving is on the cards too as well as the standard just giving website...

Might give them another call tomorrow so they associate the email with my application or is that too pushy?

  • they're not giving you a job, they're raking in money. Pushy is good I reckon, I'd call

  • Those are all great fundraising ideas. I particularly like the sausage race idea! You need to take photos of that.

Calling them is not at all pushy! I think your application will stand out (it’s amazing how many just say that they’ll set up a justgiving page...) so definitely get them to realise that it’s you. Plus I know we really like talking to our runners, and I’m sure they’ll be the same.

  • Boom, just called up and have been offered a place!

Cripes, now all I need is some cash for a deposit!

  • Good work!! You get to meet the dogs at the marathon expo, too :)

  • Crazy one for j.m.f. to try, apols if repost:

    I love hills.

And that is a truly great book.

  • yes boys, a great book full of legends, sort of people you meet in well establised outdoor events,
rhb- phew. I need to train! have a good weekend runners, with ya in the woods sunday

  • Can you use a Garmin Edge500 for a bit of running? I mean, just stick it in your pocket and go.

I do this with my 200 when I run. Would like a watch but this works pretty well and I'm struggling to justify it. You obviously don't get pace.

  • Great. I didn't want to have to put a garmin mount on my right thumb.

    :)
