I started running over the last 4 weeks and my knees are killing me. I ride my bike everywhere and have for years, to the extent that it's become rare for me to walk anywhere. I'm fast approaching 35, and after a well spent youth skating and not much other exercise I really want to get into running to stay lean (and mean). After a bit of research (dredge of the web) I have bought appropriate shoes and have been getting into doing some stretching.
I'd really appreciate any advice from people who've been in the same situation. Inner knee pain. The stretching helps and I got myself one of those foam roller things. Currently I'm doing 3-5 miles a couple of times a week, but after a long run my knees really hurt and take a couple of days to recover.
I really really don't want to kill my knees and I've never had them hurt like this before. Should I stop running or do I need to HTFU, keep it up, stretch, and allow myself recovery time? I hope so, otherwise I owe a very worthwhile charity loads of money come September.
Long post, but comments very gratefully received.
Thanks,
Jim

Weird - My missus has just been sent, from China, a brand new pair of Nike Free Run iD shoes.
In my size.
No delivery note, no nothing, and certainly not something she ordered.
Very strange.
Weird - I just got sent a maxi dress. My name. No note. Certainly not something I ordered.

Sounds like your knees arent used to the impact. Mine hate running on tarmac too, cuz I'm old. Try running off-road. (My answer to everything)

I'm determined to not drink too much tonight and make my debut at Hampstead Heath parkrun tomorrow morning. Hopefully announcing this here will make it more likely to happen.

pffft.
Get hammered.
Wake up with zero carbs in your system from pissing them out all night.
Neck 4 energy gels, and start running. -

Actually a decent runner I knew, boasted to his army mates that he could run a marathon on zero notice. As he was in such good shape. This was around 4am while on a massive bender, while posted near berlin.......
....the day before the Berlin marathon.
Feck knows how they got him a spot. But he lost the taste distance running after that one.

I did once go for a run on a Friday night after four pints in the pub. Half expected to be chucking my guts up after five minutes but somehow managed eight miles at a reasonable pace.

Its the morning aftrer thats the worse. You basically piss out any carbs in your system over the night. So your stores drop to near zero.
Once you start running, and use up your breakfast carbs, you bonk big time.
Jelly legs, headaches, blurred vision, and screwed balance, were the pleasent side efects I felt when doing a 10km after a big night.

Got home from the pub one night, felt I should have a run, fell into a ditch on Woolwich Common. Smashed my knee up badly.
2 major operations, 2 weeks in hospital and was told I'd never run again. Admittedly, I have run some pretty long races since, but haven't done anything fast, and still feel discomfort every step I take.
Drink running - not a good idea.

waiting for big veggie breakfast to digest before heading out for a trot round the river.

The run in this morning was lovely, if a bit slow. Tried a new route- didn't work at the end.
Stupid Olympics. -

Plan to run to Dunwich out the window because of my stupidity (played football for the first time in years and strained a calf) and work mundanity (new project starting Monday). Shite.

3-5 miles a few times a week sounds like quite a lot if your knees aren't used to it, especially if it's on tarmac. Step it down a bit, and then slowly build up milage again

Parkrun debut was fun, sort of.
Hampstead Heath course is reasonably hilly, as expected. Legs were suffering on the second lap, but I reckon I was on for ~24 min which I'd have been happy enough with.
Only problem was I missed a course marker towards the finish and got a bit lost. Ended up doing a 5.5 mile 5k. The field had got spread out quite a lot by then, and the person I followed must've been some random out for a Sat morning run.
Enjoyed it though, and I've got a decent reason to go back and give it another shot.
The garmin trace is a bit silly...

Will get the proper 5k time when Strava is back up.

Did 10k this morning in a smidge over an hour. Stretched out my knees after 10 mins, and did a good 20 mins stretching once I finished. They feel a lot better than they have done. I also stuck to the grass as much as possible and I'm sure that helped too. Be interesting to see how they feel in the morning.

I woke up with the intention of going for a short run but the body is still tired from my Friday night ride followed by drinking/socialising. I'll clean my bikes instead.

3rd 10 (+/- 2) miler in 4 days. Was aiming for a 50 mile week.
Knees are hurting a little. Two more days of running then back to swimming for a few days. -

Completed my first half marathon on Sunday morning, official time of 1:39:48. Very happy (and surprised) to have cracked the 100 minute mark. The run was a lot of fun, but I starting in the 2:00-2:15 group did make the first few km rather frustrating.

5 mile morning barefoot jog along the beach here in Essaouira, followed by a 15min body surf/ swim/ cool down.
Pretty windy mind- but as its the only run I've managed all week it felt great. -

^git!
Been working on varying my training this week, so doing to longer 10k runs at roughly 5min ks, one tempo 5k at about 3.50 min ks and then one interval session.
All with a view to being able to consistently running a sub 40 minute 10k in time for september olympic tri debut. Muststart training for the other discipline :s

Having already gotten wet on the ride home I changed into running gear and went back out to run up and down Covington Way. I managed 3 before my lungs threatened to shut down, then I jogged home. Pizza and guinness make great recovery food, right?
And a bar of galaxy and a foot rub.
You busy?
