  • sorta beneath the ankle bone as it leads towards the rest of the foot - towards the toes but very close to the ankle sort of area. I don't think shoes are the problem - i use hoka speedgoat for trail stuff and previous some adidas things for road. Not long switched to asics but they feel pretty good - but as I said this happened last year too when running with the adidas.

I've given it a rest and did a pleasant wee 40km z2 bike ride today so hopefully i can get a midweek run in and it'll be back to normal. Let's see

  • I'd forget how intensely the hatred burns in my soul for when I'm running in the rain and I step in a puddle which splashes a load of water up in the air so it perfectly hangs in the exact point that I'll drag the top of my toe box of my other shoe through it mid-air on my next step instantly soaking the entire front of my shoe for the rest of the run. every. fucking. time.

w2 d1 of C25k done though and the rain kept most of the dickheads indoors so was fairly quiet out there.

only 4 sets of 3x min jog,3 min recovery but carrying 128kg that feels like plenty. third and fourth intervals in each run are the hardest but in the past I always felt the same for the first couple of miles anyways so not sure if just not going long enough yet for my body to settle into it.

dog was slowing a little on the second half of our runs but we had his coat trimmed short yesterday and he was much better today, will keep him nice and trimmed through the summer if he's gonna keep running with me too. we're not carrying water at the moment as it's not enough to warrant it but we pass a water bowl about halfway round the loop i take and he never wants to drink anything so I think he's fine. once we get going a bit longer I'll chuck the running vest on and just look like the slowest try-hard ever so i can carry fluids for us both.

  • funnily enough, splashing of water is one of my favourite things. I did Great Cornard (i think) parkrun on christmas day with one of my 9 year olds, and I was teaching him how to splash people you are racing against. His first attempt wasn't great, so I showed him, and he ate quite a bit of the puddle. Oh how we (I) laughed. And I beat him in a sprint finish to make it 8-0 to me.

Your dog is almost certainly faster than my kids - and me come to think of it

  • I beat him in a sprint finish to make it 8-0 to me.

    grats

  • I only started making an effort because he said 'old men can't sprint'....

Here is an old man sprinting at Aston hall

  • And I beat him in a sprint finish to make it 8-0 to me.

It'll mean all the more to him when he finally beats you fair and square!

  • Ha! The first splash is always a bit of a downer but I’ve learned to enjoy running in the rain.
With dogs, how far can you take them on runs? Is a half too much? ‘Spose it depends on the dog…

  • my buddy ran with his dog in a 50k ultra we both did way back. he carried his food and water/proper water bowl for him and would take regular breaks to let him rest and that was after a decent period of training leading up to attempting it. but dog seemed to love it.

  • but dog seemed to love it.

I'm not convinced the photo proves this.

  • See how much weight he's lost. I bet that collar was snug at the beginning.

  • the kerchief is clearly a hipster affectation to go with his trendy moustache.

  • ICYMI, we’re 22 hours into the Barkley Marathons 2024, the top ~7 are out on loop three — that includes Jasmin Paris.

  • On the subject of Barkley, I want to introduce a friend to the concept and noticed that there are quite a few films/docs about it. Which is the best or most entertaining?- Note that this person is not particularly interested in sport, let alone ultras 😀

  • This is the famous and original one. But it’s 10 years old now - can’t say if the newer ones are better.

  • Yeah saw that JP came in as one of five at the front, half an hour or so up on John Kelly’s time from the year before.

  • all kinds of fuckery from my garmin today, completely fucked up my intended workout despite using the exact same workout setup that had worked flawlessly 2 days ago. started out feeling great on the first interval until it let me go 150% of the intended time which then threw the rest of the workout entirely out of whack.

looking forward to when I can just go out and try to maintain an avg pace and not bother with all this shit again. run/walk intervals are where it's at for me at the moment though.

  • Fuck yes.
