  • I have a Coros and prefer Garmins

I Hlhad an Instinct and now a fenix 6s solar

  • Tried to let them upgrade me to a 965 but no joy :'(

  • [EDIT -For some reason I'd thought I'd bought a refurb but looking back it seems they replaced mine for free.]

I got my 945 replaced for free by Garmin due to battery problems (it was ~22 months old at that point) and it's been great (barring the recent battery problems that were fixed with a firmware update).

    2nd June 2020 - Bought first 945
1st Apr 2022 - Contacted Garmin about poor battery life
1st Apr 2022 - They offer to replace it for free, sent off existing 945
    5th Apr 2022 - They received it
6th Apr 2022 - They posted the new one
    8th Apr 2022 - Received replacement 945

Even if you didn't want to keep it you could get more than £130 on eBay for it, that's more than you'll get for your existing 945 if it's broken.

  • Selling my used instinct for cheap if you're interested :)

  • Yeah I've had mine since 2019 - so not that annoyed but given the new 965 is out I had asked to get that instead and make up the difference which didn't seem unreasonable. I'll get a new 945 as it's a great watch, just fancied that sweet AMOLED

  • 965 isn't actually available for 2-3 weeks or so so they might just be saying no because of that. Might be worth asking them if they're prepared once the 965 is out.

But then, again, you'll get a 965 cheaper by getting the refurbed 945 for £130, buying a 965 when it comes out and then hoiking the 945 on eBay.

  • 965 is £599 and Wiggle have the 945 for £299 so unlikely to be better off with the above. But might not be a possible solution anyway given they've said no.

  • Unless you need/use the maps then the 265 looks to be the same unit as the 965. I’m hopefully getting a 265 end of the month, though undecided whether to front the extra cash for full nav maps on the 965. It’s also a tad chunkier and I have thin wrists

  • Hi, sorry I missed this. Yep still available. PM me your email and I'll forward the registration email

  • Forerunner 265 is on sportshoes.com for £430 RRP but they’re doing a 15% off code currently which takes it down to £365

  • @doubleodavey what’s the deal with shoes for track ultras? Never run on a track before but assuming Alphaflys are going to be way too unstable/pointless for that.

My regular shoes are Novablast 2s but again, pretty unstable and fear wobbling off them when knackered and turning left for the 178th time.

Maybe something more old school with not too much stack like a Puma deviate nitro or something…

  • My friend does Ultras in Nike Pegasus, I don't do ultras, but if I did, I'd probably run in Adidas Bostons / Adizero Pro (not the cheat ones) or something else that I have knocking about.

I think Hokas are raved about in ultra circles. I suppose you're more interested in ultra ovals though. oh ho ho ho ho ho!

  • You'll find that the direction is reversed every 3 hours by the way. Poor old Ray who was doing my marathon said he might cry if he hadn't finished by the turnaround time.

He hadn't finished, didn't cry. He did do a bit of walking towards the end (but not as much as I did)

  • Nice, pegs might actually be ideal for that. I’ve taken them up to the marathon distance on road and they were a bit firm but probably about right for track.

At least doing the full 6 hours you get to balance out the corners. Just a bit wary of what 3 hours of left only then right will do to my knees.

  • I asked the one person I know who has significant experience of these type of events

    Alphafly

  • I’ve not done a track ultra, but if I was I’d probably choose alphaflys, even with the extra squish of a running track to my mind anything that’s going to keep your legs fresh is going to help you keep going for longer…

  • I think I managed to run something like an 18:30 5k yesterday. I say think because my garmin is so screwed I’m having to do it manually

  • ^ Reminds me of the time I thought I'd run close to sub 60 for 10 miles, at the MK half. I blew up bigly near the finish and wobbled home some time later only via the kindness of strangers spectating giving me drinks. This was before gps so there's no way I'll ever know for sure. It had felt great though until the wheels came off though.

  • Keep us posted always keen to hear other people’s war stories

To follow up on this, had a physio appointment yesterday and she suspects the pain/discomfort is just down to increasing volume maybe a little too quickly, although she wasn’t totally against how I had increased it. Had some dry needling/massage to loosen calf, and have some strengthening exercises to do every other day. Back in next Thursday for a follow up, will do an easy 5km Wednesday to see how it is.

She didn’t think trainers were the problem, but I’ll go ahead with the run assessment tomorrow so I can at least rule bad footwear out.

  • I set the watch laps to start and finish on this distance - the time which is 18:26. My watch has that at well under 5km but I know that’s wrong. It turns out that the £500 Garmin watch doesn't even work as a stopwatch right now, so I have no idea how fast I was really running. Fantastic. Gonna have to do a park run tomorrow now

  • Last xc of the 22/3 season today, rearranged fixture. Made it hardee by riding track Weds & Fri, then cycling up to the race 9miles today.

6 hilly miles ran at 7m10 pace, 170+bpm the whole time, happy with that considering prep.

    The ride home wasn't pretty.

  • I bet the ride home sucked but was probably amazing recovery.

  • I hope it has helped, I'm pretty tired today but no muscle aches.

  • A friend invited me along for a run on Sunday, they've been recce-ing the Black Mountains Round over the past five weeks ahead of a full attempt. The hills aren't that high but fuck me every one was like trying to run (walk) up a wall. Totally trashed today. I've had three or four weeks off running due to various boring excuses and going straight into a 22 mile run with over 5000' elevation might not have been the best way to ease myself back into things!
