  • I haven't run properly for a few years now (generally just tick over at 1 run a week these days), but I know Luke and Christian pretty well so signed up to the Peak Divide in April this year and thought others on here might be interested in the event

  • Looks good, I did Chinley to Dore/Totley in a day once, and have done S.Mcr to Edale in a day too (not via Gee Cross Tesco though) and have often wondered about Mcr-Shf as a very long day out.

  • And The Trail running couple

This looks really nice, and frankly I would have loved watching the whole thing, alas those wind noises are so annoying; I wish those people would get a dead cat for their microphones..

  • Cool. Would love to do something like this one day

  • All being well I'll see you there.

  • These both look amazing although release rrp is insane.

  • That film in particular is very noisy,Others from them less so and would take a look back at others.

  • So I don't think it's going to happen for me, left shin is in a fair amount of pain and it very much feels like one of those injuries that would get worse if I dragged myself around 21km. Pretty annoying for it to happen in the final week, it had gone really well up until then, only missed 2 runs for illness. I made some mistakes: a late shoe swap might have contributed to the injury. I was getting nervous about how worn my road shoes were getting and as the distance and intensity was increasing I thought it might be an injury risk, whoops. Also probably ran my last long run too hard.
Never mind though, I started the training plan to build some fitness, get into a routine and challenge myself a bit. It was as much about the process as the event itself. Nice to get a 10k pb out of it too!

  • Good outlook, wish I could recognize the process as much as the outcome as well as you do!

  • Sorry to hear that but, as you say, there are positives to be taken from it. There will be plenty of other events to do in the future.

I made some mistakes: a late shoe swap might have contributed to the injury.

I generally have 3 pairs of running shoes on the go at any one time:

    • relatively new
    • middle aged
    • relatively old

I swap between them regularly (especially if one pair gets wet) but mainly so I get to feel the differences in cushioning. When I start noticing the cushioning going in the oldest pair, or the tread starting to fall off, I start looking for a new pair in the sales. When I eventually find them, order them, and they arrive they become the new pair and everything shuffles down the list. The old pair then go to shoe recycling.

New shoes are used for a few shorter runs first just to make sure there isn't some oddity/defect that will rip my feet to shreds on a long run.

It costs a little more up front (since you have to buy shoes sooner than you would normally) but doesn't cost any more in the long run (no pun intended) since each pair of shoes still get used until they shouldn't be run in any more (which is entirely subjective). Knowing you've always got dry shoes to run in is also a nice psychological boost.

FWIW a pair of my preferred non-trail shoe (Saucony Jazz [not the retro/fashion version]) lasts about 750km before they get recycled. My preferred trail shoes (Saucony Peregrine) are all still going at 800km+, I don't think I've had to retire a pair of them yet.

  • Thanks. 6 months ago I wasn't running at all because of a dodgy knee so just feeling pretty grateful to have been able to get this far!

  • Interesting. I did do a shorter run in the newer shoes and it seemed okay. They seemed a fair bit more comfortable in fact, so it felt like a fairly safe move to dive in. I've also never had issues with any shoes before. Maybe some kind of rotation like this would be useful for me.

  • They are good lessons to learn. Can you defer your race entry at all?

  • a late shoe swap might have contributed to the injury

    Same model?

  • Not an expert by any means but unless it was a drastic change I’d guess it wasn’t the shoes. At least not the primary cause, it could just be a coincidence. In any case that is so annoying, to happen to so close to the event too. Def the right way to respond though, lots would be tempted to push through and finish the race but you’ll be back way quicker if you take the steps needed right away. Like you said, you’ve done all the hard part - plenty more races to be had…

  • Old ones were kiprun ultralight, new ones were Nike zoom vomero

  • A few weeks ago I entered Carsington Water Half, which is in March, so there's still something to focus on and aim to be back running for. Looking forward to a slightly less intense schedule and starting to throw some cycling back into the mix!

  • Not that pair I sent to you?

    awkward

  • Lol, the very same! I could be seen stumbling along the mersey muttering curses on you under my breath

  • Whatever happened to the folly of youth & enthusiasm? Get drunk, stay up late, smash a pb and hang the consequences!

Only kidding, hope you're back on it soon.

  • I’m sorry!
They do look very different to those kipruns.

  • Please don't apologise! There's really no need, you sent a stranger on the internet free shoes, I'm really grateful!

  • Youth xc at Hampstead Heath today was all a bit sketchy. The ground was rock hard with lots of ice.

Lots of falls in the u11s - mini cookie managed to hurt his ankle before the race, but was adamant he wanted to run, so ended up limping round at the back. Hats off for resilience though.
