  • Ace! I was mulching apple trees no running today.

Out in the hills could be useful terrain and scenery to make the distance interesting & take focus off pace, but if icy still I'd think twice.

  • Take it easy out there I'm pretty sure it's not the perfect texture for running. I'll stick to the treadmill today thanks

  • Speaking about threadmills -
could somebody please give me a quick summary on threadmill running vs. regular (asphalt / park) running?

Do you run the same way, with the same shoes etc.
Is it easier or actually more strenuous / wearing on the joints?
Any useful tips for a first-time threadmill runner?

Never been to the gym before really, but planning to check out some new-years-resolution-special-discount-deal at the local spot and actually do some strenght work this winter and might jump on the threadmill while I'm there..
Basically I love running outside in the park even in winter, but really am kind of afraid of injuring myself when it gets icy..

    Thanks!

  • There's a place near me that my kids do their swimming lessons, and there's a photo up of the team who hold the world record for 24hr treadmill running, with a distance of 271 miles.

I didn't think that would be possible, but apparently they do 2 minute shifts.

Must be sub 6 mins miles though, so that's pretty impressive.

Not sure how they would change over.

I did 10 miles in a treadmill years ago when it snowed. That was thoroughly miserable

  • Not sure how they would change over.

    probably like this

    https://youtu.be/dTAAsCNK7RA

  • was thoroughly miserable

    why?

  • Boring, really hot and sweaty, and took me about 70 minutes.

I did it because I was marathon training, had a gym membership and it had snowed, thawed and refrozen.

    Never again!

  • I do 80% of my running on my treadmill at the moment just for efficiency mostly 30 mins steady straight after my cycle commute home3-4x per week just to keep up some consistent mileage without getting too tired. Then i do 1 hr inc some efforts and 90+mins steady both outdoors. I use it a lot pre season for bike/run bricks and intervals although i much prefer hill reps on an actual hill so always do those outside. The advice for treadmill running is set it on 1-2% incline to replicate flat road running. I need a mirror in front of me otherwise it feels weird and i find myself drifting side to side when i lose concentration. You'll definitely lose concentration at points on a treadmill for an hour it is boring and I'd struggle to do it without music on. It is much easier on your joints as the decks are usually sprung so shin splints are less likely compared to tarmac but any injuries caused by problems with form could be made worse due to the repetition. Use your regular running shoes and you could probably get away with a less cushioned or stiffer shoe with less repercussions than on the equivalent mileage outdoors. If you have any expensive carbon plated racey shoes the treadmill doesn't knock them out like the road as well. This is my life now not very exciting but still managing to get it done.

  • My top tip - get a tablet and watch TV while running. The furthest I've run on a treadmill is 25k and the time goes by fairly quickly if you've got something good to watch. Treadmills are also good if you have any gastro issues and want to make sure you always near a toilet. As well as obviously useful in extreme weather.

  • I almost made it to the toilet yesterday.

  • I am almost proud of you.

  • Thanks for the feedback guys! 👍

    Also that's a great photo @Retro_Bastard 😀

  • I should spin the treadmill 90° for a view of the South Downs but without the risk of stacking it. I was out for an hour and a half this morning with the dog and it was very sketchy especially the downhills.

  • Random decathlon recommendation, topical to current weather.

I bought a few pairs of these socks a few years ago. Originally intended them for casual wear while out and about in the mountain in winter but quickly started to appreciate them for hiking and running.

They have kept my toes warm with wet feet in -6 and slushy snow. Can't recommend them highly enough.

Well made, soft and they seem to do ok in the washing machine too. They are moderately thick so not for people without room in their shoes.

  • Woah that is quite the home gym! Wouldn't usually be my bag at all but staring down the barrel at a very early and very frosty run tomorrow and suddenly feeling rather jealous

  • Not a single “oh fuck” moment in these things.

  • I recognise those feet from Reddit !

  • Ha! When worlds collide.

  • One of the tricks is apparently to start recording 30 seconds before you start running, then hit pause immediately. Because the activity has started it’ll try and get a proper GPS position, so when you unpause and start running a bit after then it’ll be accurate, rather than it spending the first bit of your actual run acquiring a lock

..this works well for me - thank you again for the tip ✌️
The last two times I did basically start (and then immediately pause) the run on the watch when I put on my shoes, then left the house and "resumed" the run when I was actually on the sidewalk, ready to go - and tracking has been pretty much spot on 👍

This also seems to have solved the mis-calculated pace / splits as a side-effect 🙂

  • You'll struggle to get a GPS lock indoors as the signal strength isn't strong enough to work through walls/roofs. Always try and get a lock outside.

Most GPS watches also have a manifest file regularly updated, which gives them the approximate position of GPS satellites, so they can get a fix quicker. So make sure you're syncing it with your phone regularly.

  • Thanks for the feedback!
What I do is I use Strava with the Apple Watch and iPhone, and those do sync obviously - not sure about how to sync "manifest files" though.

  • It should just do it automagically without any input. Think it’s called A-GPS. On Polar/Garmin it tells you when the expiration is (usually a month) but they get updated every Sunday.

  • Before I list in the classifieds would anyone be interested in a Polar Vantage M watch? Less than a year old, perfect battery life, very good condition (one tiny scratch on the screen). RRP is £259, wiggle have them on offer for £173.53. Does £100 sound reasonable?

I've enjoyed using the watch, it is very quick to pick up GPS signal and seems to be pretty accurate for HR and distance. It's got quite a few Multi-Sport modes as well.

  • Messed up a bit this weekend. Got overexcited about my new trail shoes, took them out on my long run and caused myself an injury rubbing on a ligament(?) just below my ankle.
Now potentially have unreturnable shoes that cause pain and an injury that will probably stop my big Christmas run with my dad. Very silly indeed.
