  • Just been out and done 2.4 miles. Nothing to you guys, but my knee is stinging away now. Will do another on Friday, keep plugging away.

  • It band sparkes? Mine hurts after running, cycling is ok now since the introduction of speedplay.

Just make you sure stretch a lot. This cold weather is also hurting my knee.

  • It's not that bad. I stretched a bit and now I've got my feet up. Quite a depressingly short distance!

  • Half or full, you need to get your body used to running or you'll get an injury. You'll probably get round ok, but you'll suffer after.

Well, yes, I'm assuming some general running experience for the half marathon but nothing like the preparation you should bring to the full beast.

  • That's a nice analogy. I'll have a little squeeze later on, but from the bottom of the tube, BECAUSE ONLY SAVAGES SQUEEZE FROM THE MIDDLE.

Life is short... squeeze from wherever.

  • ..on brushing day

I know I post this every couple of pages. But mix some off road running into your training. It adds the strength you need with less repeatitive hard impact. Up here people are often shocked that I run on the tarmac at all. Your knees dont like it.

If its more than just noobie aches. Rest it. Knees is tricky to fix.

  • didn't know whether to post in "what are you listening to" or here. can anyone recommend good running music for someone who normally listens to music that isn't really condusive to high energy workouts or running? i find it really difficult to find things that fit the bill in my record collection and often listen to comedy, radio 4 documentaries or audio books when running... but sometimes i just think i need some motivational tunes that don't offend my garagey indie rockabilly folky poppy tastes. To give an idea of the extent of the problem: here's the most recently listened to artists on my spotify:

tv on the radio, modest mouse, gillian welch, tom waits, bo diddley, captain beefheart, pj harvey, emmy the great, yo la tengo, richard thompson, beach house, allo darlin', the knife, les savvy fav, hank williams, the byrds, the seeds, king creosote, st vincent, the rollin' stones, televion personalities, nick lowe, wilco, john cale, half man half biscuit, deerhoof, xtc, neil young, dan sartain, merle travis, tune-yards, howlin' wolf, the beasties boys (although this actually works wonders), peaking lights, nirvana, first aid kit and lana del rey....

i realise this is a bit of a daft question but would genuinely appreciate some tips from indie/folk types who also run or go to the gym. the gym's a particular necessity because i have to drown out the five hideous wobbly auto tuned uk dance tracks they play on a f*cking loop in there.

I'm thinking some 'Black Eyed Peas' or 'Flo Rider'...

  • I'm thinking some 'Black Eyed Peas' or 'Flo Rider'...

Surely just listen to what you like, its just there for a bit of entertainment when you run out of things to think about....

    Or is that just me?

  • well of course. was only wondering if anyone had any particular run-friendly favourites that might fall within my general tastes they might want to share. *shrug

have found doing intervals on a treadmill has really helped my running along recently.

  • Creedence clearwater revival?

Tend to just shuffle the playlist on my iPod shuffle, if anything comes on I don't like just skip it.

  • Anything with pushing, repetitive rhythms - The Fall, Dead Skeletons, Stereolab, Flaming Lips, Royal Trux, early Mercury Rev, Sleater Kinney.

thank you. precicely the sort of inspiration i was looking for.

  • pifko you should be up for poole park 5k races by now- free every sat.
    get yo ass over here

  • Damn you, music business, for not allowing me to embed and chuck in some advertisements into the mix. Let Anonymous have your arses!

  • I listen to the shawshank soundtrack.. works for me.

  • Rammstein, always Rammstein.

My german is rusty. But I think most of the tracks are entitled.....

....'Run you short arse, balding, middle aged prick, or I'll kill you in the face with fire, and stamp it out with my heel '....

    ....or something.

  • Funny that, most of my running music says the same.

    Or this;

Nine Pound Hammer - Run Fat Boy Run - YouTube

  • If you are running 15k faster than you ran 5k, you are not plateauing (I like typing that word - 4 vowels in a row, feels dangerous).

Oh, and run more - solution to everything.

  • Turn up to a Tuesday session, ask Dave for his thoughts on your gait. Sometimes you just feel slow tho - tiredness, demotivation, fuel, hangovers, generally being out of sorts. I'd suggest racing more - you don't know how you're doing until you really push it. Just enter a short sprint race, like a marathon or summat, see how you go.

  • AAAARGH... Still not running. I did however just spend 20 minutes standing on one leg.
