Does anyone have custom orthotics, and do you wear them running?
I have a pair for every day life and I wear them running, but I'm considering not wearing them running now as they always seem to burst out the inside of the running shoes. Hoka, Topo, Salomon and others, don't seem to be able to handle the width of my orthotics when running, and as a result I only get a few hundred miles out of certain brands of shoes.
I think I'll give running a shot whilst not wearing them and see what the outcome is. -

I am sure 500km is quoted as life for running shoes anyway?
-
• #26729
I think it's 500 miles, but there seems to be a lot of debate on that as well. Some folk think shoes should last longer than that and 500 miles is just a selling point.

Was close enough proud of that effort.
I’ll be honest I get about 500km out of mine before changing due to liking new ones

Can't beat the feeling of a new pair of runners, but my bank account doesn't share that sentiment.

Instant motivators.
I have considered the Atreyu subscription tbh, cheap and apparently very cheerful.

They look interesting, cheers. Shame they don't do a trail model.

Vibram sole cut to suit… sorted

Depends on the shoe for me.
My normal running shoes (Saucony Jazz - no, not the retro fashion ones) tend to last 800km before the cushioning has all but gone.
My trail running shoes (Saucony Peregrine) have all gone over 1000km with no real change in feel yet.
I generally have 3 pairs of each shoe (so that I never have to put on a pair damp from a run the day or two before) in an "old, middle-aged, relatively new" setup. That way I can tell from the day to day changes when the "old" pair is getting too worn out. When they eventually go I retire them and get a new pair and so the cycle continues.
(I also tag each run in Strava with the right pair of shoes but feel is still the basis for replacing shoes, not how far Strava tells me I have run in them.)

Back on the park runs.
This morning I made the mistake of going too fast. -
• #26737
I didn't make that mistake.
But it was humbling to be back after a long break (and with some sizeable ballast) and 7 minutes off my PB pace and thinking "These people in front of me look like they're barely moving" only to then realise I wasn't overtaking them.

Do you want to meet up for one next week?
My knee is almost normal again. -

Nice calm one for me this morning - linked in with a pal who was on his long run. Jogged there and back too making a total of 9km and my longest run in some time. Nice morning!

I did Bromley parkrun today and stepped in a hidden poo amongst fallen leaves.
London XC champs at Parliament hill later. My wife is supposed to be running, but she drank a bottle of brandy last night and danced around the kitchen until midnight, and it looks like she won't have recovered in time.

I'd be up for it as long as you didn't mind doing it on your own after about 2km when I desperately exhale the words "fucking hell this is a bit fast for me, I'll see you at the end in about 15 mins"
Also which park?

• #26742
Idk, we’ll have to choose on in between us I guess?
I also think we could do Lfgss forum ‘trail runs’ around our various parks of knowledge. -

6:03 for the first mile!

Yes!

Tour of Pendle was absolutely horrific, I managed to fall off the top of one of those ladder type styals over a wall and landed on a rung lower down on my groin and ankle, managed to shake it off and finish the last 15km. It’s going to be sore tomorrow.

Ouch! Tour of Pendle is pretty brutal. I did in two years ago. No specific injury during the race but I had bad ankle pain for weeks afterwards. Eventually went to a sports physio to get it sorted out. So I have bad memories of the race, but it led to a new stretching regime which has really helped

So. Where's between us on PR map?
Or does anyone want to come for a tramp around Wimbledon Common next tuesday night:
https://slow.org.uk/events/wimbledon-nov2021/
Or Saturday morning.I ran for the first time since new shoes wrecked my knees today.
It felt lovely. -

three weeks on from a 5k test that resulted in 21:33 I did another on Sunday and did 19:44.
I’ve not run faster than 5 min kms in the last 3 weeks and most are more like 6 min kms… admittedly I’ve been running an avg of 50k per week, but it restores the faith in the run slow to run fast method…
Sub 1:30 half marathon early Jan is the next target on the improvement plan..

Looking at PR map:
Clapham or Tooting I think? -

Weather looks fairly bleak with 54mph gusts...
:O
but yeah either of those are quite easy for me to get to.
I considered an actual running forum but they all seem, just not for me.
slow and further seems to be the key. The last marathon I ran I actually ate two mars bars as the month before i ran a half with gels and it did not go well so I am actually all aboard the "real" food boat already. Going to jot together a rough plan to up the miles and go for it.
