  • Joss Naylor documentary - 60 peaks at the age of 60 in 36 hours.
    https://youtu.be/hMuPOW20b4k

  • Good luck! I think there's a few Kent folk turning up. Too early in the season for 5k's for me, although I did feel distinctly more sprightly for 10 x 600 this evening, average 1:52.

I'm hedging my bets on attempts at a VMLM GFA-to-Champs upgrade. Sub-72:30 HM is still seeming a daunting prospect so I've entered the RunThrough marathon at Bedford Autodrome, end of July. Sub-2:40 seems a lot more doable given how comfortable long runs have been feeling lately. (Have managed 5x 20+ runs so far this year without even having a marathon on the horizon till now, some of them quite quick.) A dead flat course, prone to wind but otherwise fast. Feels good having a back-up plan!

  • What are people's thoughts on retiring shoes after certain distances? I've just been told by Strava that my Nike Air Structure have done 700km (which was a surprise). I've never been enamoured massively with this shoe and to be honest it looks pretty good still, everything still in good nick. But I wonder how much cushion is left in the midsole. I am a fairly light guy, a shade under 70kg.

I guess you could say I am an 'overpronator' so generally stick to stability shoes, I have just ordered a pair of Arahi 5 from Hoka. They do a 30 day 'trial' where you can return if you don't get on with them. I listened to a podcast yesterday on the topic of pronation, discussing how to certain extent 'over' pronation is a bit of a myth, or at least misunderstood by most. But given that my running is going okay at the moment and I've had some niggling injuries from the past that still linger, I'm inclined to err on the side of caution.

The colours of these Arahi are really poor though. I have heard lots of good things about the Clifton and am tempted by the Clifton Edge (heel striker here) just on the basis of some of these CW's ... https://www.hokaoneone.eu/en/gb/men-road/clifton-edge/1110510.html?dwvar_1110510_color=NCLR

  • What are people's thoughts on retiring shoes after certain distances?

I retire mine by feel, not just at a certain distance.

I generally have 3 pairs of each shoe on the go at any one time. Right now for my non-trail shoe (Saucony Jazz 18, 19 and 21) they've got 160km, 500km and 720km on them.

By using them in rotation it gives them a chance to dry out (from sweat or rain), plus I feel the difference between them easily. The 720km pair are almost done as I'm starting to feel the difference between them and the other two pairs. I'll start looking for a new pair in any sales.

The other reason I retire them is if the tread starts to go.

  • In the lakes at the moment, ran straight up Loughrigg Fell yesterday, nearly killed me. South Coast running does not prepare you...

Gonna run up Old Man of Coniston tomorrow. New levels of appreciation for the regulars here.

  • Sounds wonderful,Any photographs?

  • After years of running in inov8s and the, falling apart after 300km, I’m still Working out what retirement time is and I think @Greenbank has it right you can feel when shoes lose their bounce and see if they are falling apart, both pair I’ve worn out this year were feeling dead after about 500km so they got downgraded to easy runs for another 150k and now they are treadmill shoes, pair one is now closer to 900km and the other is about to hit treadmill status. The 900km pair are mostly used for walking the dog now...

  • I had some Adidas Bostons for years. They didn't bounce much anymore, but they felt like slippers so I kept them until they started talking (sole started detaching on one side).

I'm a bit rubbish at binning old shoes.

I conservatively estimate I ran at least 1000 miles in them

  • Didn't really stop haha. Here is one on the way back to Ambleside, and one from the start of Sticklebarn by Old Dungeon Ghyl. That one was very nice, if somewhat tricky.

  • Looks great, Thanks.

  • On the chat RE shoe death - I took the Arahi for a first run yesterday and they definitely felt much 'poppier' if that makes sense. Was quite surprised actually. I still think the 700km Nike's have got a couple of hundred K left perhaps, I can relegate these to shorter runs for now before they go to shoe heaven.

  • Vest has arrived for the Great North Run -

  • DAMIAN HALL BREAKS 185-MILE WAINWRIGHT’S COAST TO COAST RECORD-

    https://www.inov-8.com/damian-hall-wainwrights-coast-to-coast-record-attempt?utm_campaign

  • As predicted a spectacular fail in the 5k last night. Dropped out after 2k with my head in a total muddle. Got another go on 7th June, assuming a baby doesn't arrive first.

    John Kelly is a lunatic.

  • Dropped out after 2k with my head in a total muddle

Ah, hope you're back on it for 7th June & all goes well with new arrival on the 8th!

Got my first 5k race in forever on 16th all being well. No pb attempt.

  • Water fountains don’t seem to be a big thing in London and the UK in general. Anyone got locations that they’re willing to disclose?

  • Happy with garden or churchyard taps

  • Plenty of taps around here dotted around bridleways etc. Can't remember the last time I saw a water fountain to drink from though!

  • Also - Refill app which looks quite good for the rest of the UK
    https://www.water.org.uk/news-campaigns/campaigns/refill/

  • That refill app looks great, downloading now....

On shoe chat from above, loving the comfort of the Pegasus Trail 2's, but seeing some significant wear on the sole tread. Almost completely removed the 'knobs' on the back corner, no wonder they've been feeling a bit slippy on loose stuff. They've done about 15o miles.

Thinking I might replace them with something a bit sturdier, especially now we're into harder terrain season, what's the go to Hoka for off road? Something cushioned (I roll around the outside of my foot so was told to use cushioned neutral shoes).

  • My peg trail 2's have got another couple of months in them the tread if fine but the cushioning is starting to go. I reckon I've done 200 miles in them. Going to try the inov8 trailfly ultra g300 max next. They fit your bill and should last ages with the Graphene outsole . Hopefully they might be on sale when i buy them🤞 I'm not a Hoka fan so can't help on those I'm afraid
