  • Hi all. Noob runner with a not-really-running noob question. When out cycling, I do the Right Thing and respectfully/cheerfully/sullenly wave at other cyclists. Does one wave at other runners? If so, what is it just the standard acknowledgment nod sort of deal? If not, why not?

  • I say hello to everyone. But I tend to run in more sparsely populated countryside so there's not so many people about. I guess in a busy London park you can't say hi to everyone?

  • Pre-covid it was high 5's if they were oncoming,

Now I cross roads / rivers / mountains to avoid oncoming runners.

  • If it's a big thoroughfare with lots of people, then no greetings.

The more out of the way / odd times of day, the more greetingish I get, right up to a full "good morning" or "good afternoon".

If it's in the middle of nowhere,

  • No waving in London. No smiling in London. Death stares, grumpy Gurnard and suffer eyes only.

Out of London- hellos are de rigueur.

  • On the riverside running track - nah. Maybe a friendly nod if I feel inspired. If I know them then I'll bellow JIAYOUUUUUUUUU at them and maybe some abuse.
On the streets near mine, I don't see that many runners so I get overexcited and smile (probably more like a grimace) and pretend to myself that we're going to be BFFs for life... and they blank me.

  • What are people's experiences with waterproof jackets

I just need something lightweight & packable that I can take out when / if (but most likely when, given the current weather) the weather turns, although I not planning to be anywhere particularly remote (maybe 10 minutes from a village at any point).

They all seem to be insanely expensive though - Even more so, considering how infrequently I expect to be wearing one.

Currently my top choice is the Salomon Bonatti Race Jacket - £80, 160g, 10k/10k

To be honest, it's my only choice, unless I can find something cheaper & as good.

  • The £35ish decathlon one is about that weight iirc

    Edit: here https://www.decathlon.co.uk/kiprun-showerproof-jacket-id_8489257.html

  • I have a waterproof jacket I got given at a race, it's ok for light showers but it's a nightmare to get off when it's wet. I have to make sure my watch is out of the sleeve as otherwise it gets waterlogged. It's white and so gets filthy easily too. Maybe you get what you pay for? (LOL just kidding, go to decathlon)

  • If you’re in hills or mountains or out for hours upon hours then a quality waterproof is sensible (more so if you have to stop or slow down)

For urban / park stuff for up to a couple of hours then I just use a cheap decathlon gilet if it’s raining - the wind proof one that breaths rather than the actual waterproof. It’s enough to act as a layer even when it soaks through.

  • Anybody want a Montane Allez Hoodie in XL?

Brand new with tags. Has been in under bed storage for two years but never worn.

Montane sizing is tight. I'm 6'4 with a 43" chest and even the XXL is a touch tight around the shoulders and chest on me. Expect a skin tight fit.

I use an XXL as a mountaineering mid layer. Performs superbly.

They are £70 from Montane, so maybe £35 posted? https://www.montane.com/mens-c1/montane-allez-micro-fleece-hoodie-p403#attribute[3]=205

  • Have found cyclists nod/wave more than runners in general. Never had a high 5 offered up, other than sometimes kids at races which is supercool of course.

  • Fwiw I use:

Remote = Montane Minimus over merino layer(s) depending on time of year.

Local = Montane featherlite (wind jacket) over Merino.

Last night the wind jacket came off as I warmed up and was carried scrunched up in my hand as it's tiny. Although wet the merino layer (long sleeve) kept me warm. In winter I'd do same with extra mesh layer under the merino.

If it's a shorter local run from & to home I'd likely not bother with waterproof.

  • Never bothered with a waterproof for running...just wear a cap to keep rain off the glasses

  • some decathlon joints looked ok, I recall their "trail" running one packed up into a little pouch with a handle that you could hold whilst running.

  • is anyone paying the English Athletics fee for the rest of the year?

  • Probably will, but I'm involved with my local club and we rely on having 10 people affiliate with EA to get a London Marathon place for the club so that's the only (inderect) benefit I'd really get from it. Not like there are going to be any races soon.

  • I thought I would do it just on the off chance there is some sort of XC season.

    What's fifteen quid after all

  • I'm paid up fwiw, xc opportunity is main reason for me.

  • XC update:

The ECCA were represented at we the meeting referred to below. We will continue with our planning for Cross Country although we accept that there will be restrictions but we will move forward as quickly and safely as we can. The formal statement is below.
England Athletics is pleased to announce that we have begun making steps towards a restricted return to Cross Country competition. On the 27th August 2020 we held a meeting with the Cross Country community, including the ECCA, the areas, and some league organisers to agree on the following proposed timeline for a return to Cross Country Competition:

    Mid-September to mid-October – Pilot XC Competitions

5th October – Licence application process opens

17th October – Licensed Cross Country competition can resume

These dates are provisional and will be adapted if necessary, with any additional Government guidance that is issued.
Cross Country competition will be unable to resume in the traditional format, adaptations will have to be made based on the current circumstances regarding the virus. However, England Athletics believe this is an exciting step forward for the Cross-Country community and we are currently working on guidance with the named organisations to support competition providers in providing a safe return to adapted cross country competition.

We are aiming for a version of the guidance to be published for competition organisers on W/C 14th September 2020. It will be the decision of the competition provider whether they will host competitions given the restrictions within the guidance. The 2020/21 XC fixture dates are below. All cross-country dates will remain ring fenced until further notice. Due to the licensing timeline above all have agreed the first league fixture date in October will be cancelled. All licensed competitions will be published on the England Athletics website when licensing opens.

Cross Country fixture lists subject to change and race formats to be confirmed subject to guidance.

    31st October ECCA XC Relays

  • Rain jacket chat - I went with the Salomon waterproof jacket in the end, as I could get it delivered next day. I couldn't even get the Decathlon site to work, unfortunately.

Used it in a few bits of windy drizzle, and then on the ferry at the end of my run, when I started shivering like jackhammer.

Fun day of running - Fowey to Padstow along the Saints' Way - 46k with 1.2k of climbing.

I'm a bit broken now, though, as I've done nowhere near the groundwork for doing something like this comfortably.

  • Good running @TW !

  • Oof, good work!

The route via Tywardreath or the one via Lanlivery?

(I wouldn't get past The Crown Inn in Lanlivery if I tried it. Went there twice in two days the other week. Good food.)

  • Via Lanivery.

    The Crown smelled good!
