Despite poor recent efforts, I thought I’d try and run a half today. The trick was to do an out and back, so once I was half way I’d be forced to finish it. I’m absolutely bollocksed, and it was a foolish idea, but it feels like it might be a turning point in getting the running habit back.

Did a virtual 5km this morning with my work's starva run club - got a PB!
25:10 soooo close so < 25. Sooo nearly barfed too ;-) -

I'm not built for running in warmth like that. Ugh.
Started off thinking I'll begin the build up past 5k and maybe do an extra detour to make it 6km but a few km in it was obvious I was melting.
Still, I'm keeping to my 3x5k a week, just need to keep at it, shift the weight and then slowly progress back to 10km.

The weight part I have found a reasonable difference maker - especially as you go further.
Just keeping at it is the way to go 🙂

before 9am or after about 630pm is the only time I can run right now - day time is waaaay too hot.

What trainer shops are delivering at the moment?

My order from inov8 came in 2 days last week too. But I think probs most shops are still doing online orders.

Yes - got one a month ago. Like it, doesn’t look too much like a smart watch. Garmin Connect is a learning curve, it’s definitely not a standalone device, but once you get the hang of it it’s good. Still getting my head around training with heart rate / target and the most accurate metrics whilst running, think there’s an art to it. Battery life is good, probably charge once a week.

Haha I did the exact same time the other day, felt kinda fine though part of me is is annoyed I didn't try harder and part of me is annoyed I fucked up my ankle further.

Nice! Will keep an eye out. Most cheap places are sold out so I’ll keep looking.
Excited to have music without taking my phone out. -

Got out for a long one earlier. Freaking beautiful day for it but fuck me I'm dehydrated now! Took a litre with me and ran out a few miles from home. This with nasal breathing the whole way to reduce water loss and keep the intensity under control. A tad under 20miles with plenty of hills. Saw about 3 people the whole way.

Nike are, and there's also 30% off at the moment - even off the sale items. Picked up some new ones rrp £112 for 40 something yesterday.
Disappointed to find out they've discontinued lunarglides though.

Apparently the new reacts are a massive upgrade to lunarglides.

@nefarious Random question - did you do the half without any water? I want to do a half and might do a similar tactic, driving halfway before to stash a drink.
I got into running 1-2 months to train for my first half which has been cancelled. Been doing 3 runs (5/10/15km) each week since lockdown and I finish 15km fine, not thirsty at all and like I could carry on. I should really do a few 18-20kms on a Sunday first but if I am at 18k I will want to carry on. -

It was roasting, 21c, and I expected to struggle, so I had a race vest with 500ml water and 500ml electrolyte mix, and with some gels and bars too. It was on trails for 90%, so a bit slower going than a road half.
I’m very glad I had food and drink in excess, my body isn’t back in the rhythm of running, and I’d simply have run out of beans otherwise. For example, when I was in good shape, I’d take a gel or two for a road half in training (assuming it was cool temperature wise).

Yeah thanks that’s what I’ve gone for, so will see how they are.
Unfortunately I’m extremely flat footed and find it hard to get trainers that don’t cause me pain.
I’m only a casual runner, getting back into it again more lately, but have been using lunarglides in their various forms for years now without issues, hence hoping the new ones aren’t too different. -

It’s shit when you find a shoe that works. Then they stop making...
-
• #22120
@nefarious sounds sensible I will look to do similar. Cheers

If you haven't had much experience with hydration (and feeding) when running longer distances in hotter temps then you could stick to smaller loops, keeping food and drink at the start of the loop. Plus you won't need to resort to using a car during lockdown.

I've been taking a 2 ltr bladder out with me for longer runs, and a little colapsable bowl for the doggo. I also tend to grab a couple trek bars and treats too. Nothing worse than bonking on a run.

That study isn't well regarded at all. Even the author is trying to put people straight about it:-
I go to the wholesaler and buy every pair they have.
