  • And Righto.

Let’s hear your 2019 targets! And 2018 running highlights.

Also, general big thumbs up for this thread. Great to see such a buzzing and supporting group of runners.

  • OMM 20l straps are fine for me at 6ft2andabit.

I find the 8l 'yoke' strap sits higher, but I'd always put that down to design.

Work have some Osprey mtb bags, I borrowed one to run with once and it was v.comfy.

  • 2018 running highlights

    Sub 17 5k.

    DtD 'black' finish.

    2019 targets

    Another sub 17 5km, sub 35 10km

Sub 1h40 at Race the Train, Tywyn

90 atcf at Meriden? Focus on this before August might conflict with the above goals.

  • congratulations! You may find that your long distance running improves. Those long runs suddenly become that much more peaceful and enjoyable.

There is a definite tipping point though - I think with my first I could run unhindered, but then when the twins came along, I had about 6 months of carrying on as before, and then my performance started to take a dive.

    YMMV of course

  • looking forward to seeing how it affects marathon training.

Getting up for a run at 5am is easier when you're already up! Congratulations!!

  • Thanks everyone!

    @doubleodavey YMMV?

2018 highlights - enjoying running again from August through to December, including 16.06 5k pb and some good x country.

2019 targets - continue enjoying running, including VMLM and then hopefully some fell stuff in the summer (but I say that every year!).

And I agree @nefarious - this thread is great, uniformly welcoming, positive and full of good advice.

  • Your Mileage May Vary

  • PB at London Marathon and 100miles at Endure 24 are targets for first half of 2019. PB should be achievable, I managed 4 hours last time and I'm a lot fitter now. 100 though... We'll see.

  • 2018 highlights: completing Thames Trot 50 miler and realising ultras are something I can do. The whole summer of running in amazing weather. Getting properly involved with the running club. Round Reading and Dare 12 without hitting the wall. Last Saturday's run along the Ridgeway. Feeling like a runner.

  • 2019 goals:
1500 km (or at very least not less than 1000)
    Marathon PB in Rotterdam
    Race a 10km

  • https://www.peteblandsports.co.uk/buy/omm-classic-25_5671.htm Like this sort of thing? Bit cheaper than ultimate direction

@nefarious that’s about the size of what I have now, but not quite big enough in winter- I run 6 miles then get train so need a jacket to keep warm, lunch for work, snacks etc

Might give OMM a go as I like the outside mesh pockets

  • Yeah that's the kind.

Mine is https://www.runnersneed.com/p/omm-adventure-light-20-l-M4624334.html but now that's the Ultra 20 with some slight changes. If you can get up to a Runners Need store they should have a selection of current bags so you can try for fit.

Reminds me I still hanker after a 32l classic for light camping duties.

  • +1 for great thread. Esp when there are so many ridiculously talented people in here - very little in the way of egos.
2018 highlights: feeling comfortable & enjoying running, doing parkruns, getting "Tues run club" up and running in my lab
2019 targets: sub 20 5k, run more 10ks, run a 20+km run, do more adventurous trail/fell runs in the peaks

  • @juanito congratulations!

  • Highlight and lowlight probably got to be my unexpected ultra duathlon. Signed up for Hamburg Ironman - weather was unseasonably hot, enough so that the blue/green algae in the lake got to unsafe levels and the council declared nobody was allowed in the water. So it became 6k run/180k bike/42k run.
All going swimmingly (minus the lack of swim) until half way around the marathon where my almost-never-happens-but-very-occasionally-does-fashionable-sports-induced-asthma kicked in and I had to run/walk for about 2.5 hours. So while I'm aware that an Ironman [branded event] should be a fairly big deal, it was bloody annoying how it panned out.
Planning to put it right at Challenge Roth next July. Maybe even get a swim at the start of it.

  • Thanks buddy! Turned out I had packed it in my shoe 🙈🤦🏻‍♂️ - gonna run round holyrood Park tomorrow. Any other reccos?

  • Arthur’s Seat.

  • How many kilometres before you found it?

I just ran around near my parents place in Murrayfield when I was home. Hollyrood Park will be 👍🏻
Wish we were close enough to run there.

  • +1 for Arthur’s Seat

  • 2018 was first year of running and it was super fun:

-starting running after a drunken bet in February on a Friday that I could run a marathon within 48 hour. Come Sunday night at about 5pm I head off from Bristol towards Bath wearing a pair of non-running New Balance’s. 4 hours and 47 minutes later I made it but for the next two days I was literally bed bound.
-Running around Bristol was an absolute pleasure and going over the Clifton Suspension bridge was always great.
-This summer of running, with the weather, was absolutely fantastic and made continuing my new hobby so much easier.
-Beating my marathon time by an hour in October and getting in under 4 hours.
-Finally, after setting myself the goal of achieving a sub 20 5k by the end of summer I got one last week along with my first Park Run.

Next year, I’d like to enter a marathon that has other people in, join a club, get a sub 19 5k and stop being a twat on a Friday night so I can get to more park runs.

    Haha, you twat. Well done!

  • Yay! Congrats again, great news. :)

    2018 highlights:

    • still eking out the odd PB at 45, particularly pleased with 71:26 half marathon. Cheers Dave! ;-)
    • 3rd V45 at London Marathon, and my best overall placement, 92nd

    2019 targets:

    • no idea! Get rid of this right foot niggle.
    • Presently more motivated by non-running goals, and seriously considering training properly for the British Indoor Rowing Champs at the end of the year, if I can get anywhere near my best times in the gym over the coming months.
  • 3rd V45 at London Marathon, and my best overall placement, 92nd

I'm sure this was mentioned at the time but that is very impressive! #rep

  • Thank you! One of the consolations of getting older; I remember standing on the start line, hottest LM on record and already sweating like a nutter, cursing the likelihood that a PB was out the window, but reminding myself there was still something to race for. If only I'd known 2nd V45 was just 16 seconds in front of me at the end and fading. D'oh! :)
