I think I'm going to suffer on Round Reading at the end of the month.
I haven't made my mind up 100% whether to still do it or not. If I do I'll be around fri and sat eve if you fancy grabbing a bite or a beer (though I'll be finishing much later than you on the day, aiming for around same as last year 8hrs buttock pain notwithstanding)

How are people coping with running in this heat?
I'm loving it and my tan is awesome, but furthest distance has been 11 miles - hah! I'll start some longer runs soon building up for a half with a sub90 target in mind.
Do you eat much on these sort of distances? Apples/grapes are full of water and sugar if you want another way to hydrate/fuel.

I wanted to walk on my slow, short run this lunch.

my tan is awesome
I wear 3/4 length cycle trousers on my bike which leaves a ring around my ankles,
calf sleeves and shorts on long distance walks/hikes/ultras which leave a ring around my knees
then when I wear normal shorts I look like a barber pole.
add no socks to the mix if i'm wearing flipflops and my pasty white feet look like someones cut the bloodflow to them.I'm a freak.

Yeah I need to get on the home made electrolyte drink, save some pennies. I've used Tailwind in the past for events but for training runs I need to keep the cost down.
@HatBeard - Yeah I'd be up for a beer. I'll be staying at a friend's in Reading on the Friday night so will be about. Hoping for a sub-5 hour time but not done the route before so nav+weather might slow me down.
@Pifko - Oh yeah I'm not complaining at all. Great weather. Must be nice down on the beach? I have been trialling not eating on long runs recently, partly because I normally have a good breakfast if I know I'm heading out but also hoping to train endurance relying on my energy stores without having to eat much extra. No idea if it's a scientifically sound approach, one less thing to think about :)

I've got a smashed up Garmin from my latest cycling off, so I'm not wearing it.
This is showing off my watch tan handsomely.
Couple that with sock / short / tshirt tan, and the previously accident facial scars tanning more than the rest of my fizzog and I look quite a treat.

if you have a fairly recent gps watch look into getting the route onto it for navigation. it's complicated enough that you can get lost in some section easily, I was saved a couple of times by my watch telling me i was off course as i'd missed a marker. my fr935 worked really well last year.

I racing an ultra in August so I've been trying to get used to the heat just in case it's hot then. Been going out for my long runs in the middle of the day etc. Just have to slow down and take on fluids. Helps that there's a couple of tap locations around here too.
Returning to Victoria Park tonight for the 10K - interested to see how I get on, been doing big mileage and very little speedwork recently.

Thank you, I really appreciate the encouragement!
I'm going to try and do my first 10k run next week, before a week in Malta. Might leave my stuff in work overnight and trudge along the canal in on a commute. Definitely taking it easy, am ready for a whole lot of discomfort when I pass my previous max distance. -

Heal up soon! There's a Cotswold 24 coming up soon that you could put some of that training towards...

diclofenac
I just assume that we all mainline diclofenac by default, once we hit a certain age...

Alas, see my previous posts on TomTom woes. I have installed RunGo on my phone which the organisers reccommend and have last year's route to play with. Hopefully that will be enough!

What are your current 10k/HM times
I have nothing current at the moment - all of my running for the past 12+ months has been pootling. My estimates are based purely on guesses, although I'm not afraid of modifying them downwards as my training Progresses.
5k tempo on the treadmill today (as it's too damn warm to run outside at midday still).

I've been walking up to your neck of the woods recently on my training strolls. will have to arrange a meetup for a cuppa soon.
think my glute just needs some time for inflammation to go down, of course my reluctance to tube it to work and instead ride fixed probably isn't going to help in that respect.

your phone should work fine it'll just be a bit more cumbersome is all.
last year was their first time so hopefully the signage will be a bit clearer this time, one guy i know did over 3 extra miles from getting lost

I'd speak with @_Leon about that - His blog - http://www.jasonmfalconer.co.uk/
It's likely that local parks to you have been mapped for orienteering . You might notice control posts dotted around:

I'm pretty sure they advertise it as a self nav, unsignposted route but I've seen the odd sign here and there for the course so hopefully I'll be ok! I'm not too bothered about my time tbh, I only entered this to give me a push to get back on the long runs.
^Jornet is so good it's almost unbeleivable. Really impressive running. I read somewhere that he targets something like somewhere between 90 and 120 thousand feet of elevation a week. I struggle to hit 3!
@HatBeard - heal up soon. Say well done to your running mates!
How are people coping with running in this heat?
Specifically on long runs I'm really struggling to get enough fluids in. A couple of weeks ago 2l water and a glass of coke wasn't enough, but that was almost 4 hours out and about in the afternoon. Saturday I drank about 1.5l water over 19 miles. Problem is I don't feel I can drink much more. Is it just a case of I'm using more (sweating etc) than I can take in or are there some pro tips I'm missing?
I think I'm going to suffer on Round Reading at the end of the month.
