  • Not much to shout about but 2 days of 10km. In the countryside.

  • I did the GutBuster 10 mile this morning. Havent run for a month so pleased to A: not die, B: run it all and C: not be last in my age/category.

I think I like cross country. I'm better at running up hills then on flat.

  • 17 miles around the canals this morning. Nice way to finish off the year.

Time for a 2017 review then surely? Overall mileage was relatively low thanks to dodgy achilles Feb - May, but progressive monthly mileage Aug - Dec has gone 200, 230, 249, 251, 282, and I feel in better shape going into Spring marathon training than I have done before. Running highlights include 3rd place at Beachy Head Marathon, with 7 mins off my course pb, and my best age ranking (UK 3rd V45, 10,000 metres) which was mainly achieved by running a relatively obscure event.

Main target for 2018 is a sub-2:30 marathon. Any other sort of PB, and/or injury avoidance will be a bonus!

  • do you mind me asking how old you are, and how long you've been running?

  • Turned 45 in June. Started running properly 11 years ago, ran my first marathon 2007 after 9 months of training, 3:04. Enjoyed some fairly solid progression 2006 - 2009 (1ok time down from 40:15 to 33:25), had major hip injury/surgery in 2011 which kept me out of running 12 months, but got back into PB shape 2012, peaked 2015 with current PBs at 5,000m, 10k, HM and marathon (2:30:30). Pretty much hit a plateau now but hoping I can eek out a tiny marathon PB before I start slowing down again!

  • My stats for this year.

Included sub 9hrs for the SDW50 and a sub 3:15 for the Abingdon Marathon. I went into both underprepared so happy with both times under the circumstances. Normally I run more in the winter and cycle more in summer but the Abingdon Mara forced me to keep running so I also had one of my best performances ever in the first XC of the year.

Since then I've had a block of working abroad where running wasn't really possible so I've done virtually nothing the last couple of months.

Lovely 5k running under the full moon with my GF and dogs today was a beautiful end of the year.

  • Longest run this fucking waste of a year has been 9km on the treadmill, but been taking rehab seriously and 20.38 at last week's Parkrun was pretty heartening - would be nice to get sub-20 for 5km, down close to 40 for 10km, close to 3.10 mara and sub-20hr for a 100 miler. And really just to get back to doing some decent long runs in interesting places.

Smart money's on being chronically crippled by Feb...

  • 2017: not much running really, but on two different continents and 4 (or 5?) different countries. Met loads of amazing people through running. Spent a lot of time on the treadmill. Did a mountain trail race.

2018: trail race in Jiangsu planned for this month, then a half marathon in Suzhou in March, maybe Wuxi Marathon or Zhuhai. Shanghai marathon at the end of the year. Need to run outside more and go to track training. Probably ought to go to a chiropodist. Gonna try to do at least one parkrun but it will involve some logistics!

  • 2017: first time over 2000 miles, first road marathon, first ultra.
2018: get marathon time down under 2:50, and a couple more ultras to find out how I cope over long stuff.

  • Anyone do this today?

I did it a few years ago. I'm still in no condition to run, particularly in the cold, but it was great fun. I didn't do it in fancy-dress and felt very left out. I spent most of the 10k between a French Maid and a Dalek.

  • 23rd - 10k training, boxing day- race in ringwood forest. today -tuesday training normal service resumed thank fuck

  • @dubkev - you seem to be getting a lot faster.

  • 2017 ended in may as far as im concerned for running, 17:50 at my local park run was the hugh point, with a 1:24 half marathon a few weeks before coming a close second, only to be ruined by a howler of a day at the London Marathon where I fell apart at 10 miles, and came in at 3:29 vs a goal of 2:59, it was briefly resruected a week later when I got the CR back on the coatal path near my parents house in port Isaac, but then I basically stopped running.

going into 2018 I challenged myself to run 100 miles in December, which has certainly improved my based, and the aim is sub 3:05 at Brighton, with another 1:24 half marathon and a 17:30 5k on the way to that. key in this is probably building mental toughness, I'm good at going fairly fast, and going long but fast and long has so far eluded me. following hal higdons advance marathon plan with some tri training in there as well as id like to qualify for the GB Age Group again, and do a 4:40 70.3 at challenge Prague in July too so need a base of swimming and running. first priority is to lose a stone and build running again!

  • dubkev - you seem to be getting a lot faster.

Wind at my back, and the rain made me want to get out of it as fast as I could!

  • first priority is to lose a stone and build running again!

I'll start with this and see how I get on...

  • my girlfriend has a half marathon later this year, so is using it as motivation to do more running. Is there somewhere in London she could go to have the running equivalent of a bike fit, to ensure she has the correct shoes and so on? Is Profeet in Fulham good?

  • I paid for the profeet fit and they righted a wrong from a previous, free of charge, fit (went from structured to neutral). I was happy and didn't feel the need to buy any trainers.

  • Last run was Sep 19th (I broke a metatarsal playing football that evening). Rest and physio done and I'm ok to run again.

Have an eye on a sprint tri in June but going to skip the Marathon this year and focus on getting fit again, getting down to a sensible weight and enjoying running/swimming/cycling again.

  • thank you. was that the £65 one or the £15 one?

  • I'm starting up again too, as cycling just doesn't burn enough calories for me.
Will be keeping it sensible 1 or 2 runs a week and chuck in a walk-commute to work too for more time on feet.

  • £65 from the looks of it. was a bit ago. the looked at my hips down that resulted in the proper diagnosis.

  • thanks very much

  • Is there anywhere that does that stuff more SE?
What's the running shop in Herne Hill like?

  • The one at the end of my road?

  • For definite? I've only been in there once and I was only mooching. I'll call them.
