  • ^ fuckin hell

  • yeah, but i'm still bloody slow!

  • Yeah- I've not seen a phone book for years

  • Colm is fucking quick!

Training-wise, I commute 25km a day on the bike and run on top of that. I'm currently only running about 20km a week, but that will build slowly as I'm working up to the Greensand Marathon in September. I aim to add 10% a week distance to my running, as well as strength training a couple of times a week at Keiser in Mornington Crescent.
Towards the end of the month I'll start doing stair climbs at work in my lunch hour. The bottom level of the car park to the door onto the roof is 38 floors, and I do three times up and down. When I was training for the MDS I did it wearing a fleece top and carrying a daysack full of phonebooks. I got funny looks from people in suits.

It tends to take over your life a bit, but it saves me from having to have a social life.

    wooaaahh!

I hope you give yourself a rest day at least once a week?

  • Woot! First run in exactly a month. 5k gentle and only the slightest hint of soreness in the knee. Happy happy happy. Shame the Garmin took 4km to get a connection but to be fair it has been 4 weeks and 10,000miles since I last turned it on.

  • Went to the gym today, then before having a shower I ran round the perimeter of Peckham Rye.

What was interesting was the shear amount of work your lower leg -in particular your calve- does when running with a forefoot strike.

I ran at a couple of different paces, both on and off the path, and the difference in surface was extremely noticable- much lower calf loading on the grass.

Really shows how much harder you hit the ground on tarmac.

It's also demonstrated that my calf muscles are rubbish.

I managed once round the Rye- any more than that and I think I'd be walking on my hands tomorrow, my left calf is extremely stiff right now.

  • Ive been running on and off for the last 8 years or so, but more recently ive been getting strange pains, especially top of the thigh, almost feels like pain where my joint between hip/femur. Ive also noticed increased amount of wear around the outer edge of my running shoes. Any ideas?

  • 21.15 for this mornings park run. I suspect that that was the last of my "easy" pb's and that to get under 21 and certainly to get under 20 I'm going to have to be a little more specific and frequent with my running. Really enjoying it though I am fucked today,

  • What distance Woodie?

  • Parkruns are 5km.

  • Ah, D'oh. Thanks KL.

21 mins is fast- well, a lot faster than me, I shall have to try harder.

22.46 is my fastest 5k, to take three minutes out of that is going to hurt!

  • Dammit, the parkrun at Hackney Marshes is totally flat so you could probably take a chunk off there?

The winner today went under 15 minutes which is frankly ridiculous.

  • Just under five minutes a mile?! Blimey.

I tend to run circuits of Dulwich Park, which has a gentle slope from one end to the other:

Not sure how much faster I'd go on the flat.

Talk to a chiropractor and get them to check the alignment of your spine. It's best to start high when it comes to running aches and injuries creeping up on you.

Shoulders, back, hips, knees and ankles/feet can be very closely linked when it comes to tears, strains etc.

I'd echo that sentiment. But see an osteopath not a chiropractor.

    Oops, yeah that one..

  • It's official, I'm rubbish:

  • ^what app is that?

  • It's from Garmin Connect- free service if you have a Garmin

  • Did you have a heart attack after one mile?

  • Pretty much!

Been feeling a bit crook, so that was a test really- one race pace lap, stop, one recovery lap, then home.

  • Took 1.40 off my PB 5k today. I'm still incredibly slow (by the standards of other people who've posted on here), but I've been running with an eye on finishing my runs without aches and pains (after early injuries when I first started in March) rather than speed. Knee felt fine for the entirety of the run today, so (assuming nothing sneaks up on me in the next few hours/day) maybe I can start working on speed now.

  • You fancy running with company Mrak? I'd quite like to have someone to chat to, happy to come Norf of the river if you have somewhere nice to go and where i won't have my bike stolen.

  • I could be up for that. But I'm slow (6min/k)!

There are a bunch of great runs around here. My normal are: up the Lee and back (which can be mixed up with all kinds of little shoot-offs, like into Wick Woods which offers a nice 1k dirt trail, or into the Hackney Marshes, which is around 5k on grass and paved paths, or into the waterworks) or around Viccy Park, or laps of Mabley Green (the most boring, but it's flat, on grass, and a lap is just over 1k).

  • Slow is fine, you've seen what happens when I try to run fast at the moment.

Can I leave my bike at yours?
