  • Think I'm going to try 10k tonight, abet slowly at 10kmh.

  • training now for the windsor half...did 8km run this morning followed by 30km on ss. feeling it :0. I ran the amsterdam half last yearc in 2'10" after 2 months training but then ruined it by doing nothing for 6 months. I really want to get back into it on the regular with aims to running the Tough Mudder next year in may.

  • Managed to beat my 10k personal best yesterday - 53 minutes. (Park/Canal/Road) It was odd because I hadn't been running for over a week, didn't feel up to it, wasn't aiming to do it, even had a stitch for the most part (which is unusual for me) I just got over a third of the way and thought I'm making good time why not? Felt pretty good. Gonna aim for 50 next time.

  • Maybe we should have a results board for us learner runners to spur us on?

Pretty good, went on my first 10k run, done in 65 minutes and had the worse stitch ever (which was sorted after a drink of coke), 10 minutes over target.

55 minutes is a normal target is it? least I'm 75kg now from 91kg.

Liking the sound of that, give us some kind of motivation.

53 to 50 is 30s per mile faster, good if you can step up that much next time out, but don't be disappointed if it takes a while longer to get there.

  • I'll go out and do 10K later today and add myself to the list.

  • Unless I'm the slowest, in which case I'll pretend I broke my leg or something

  • I ran this morning. Sadly not the full 10k but i did 8.7 km in 45ish minutes.

  • 48.55 for 10K this afternoon.

Ran around getting the plaster off my hands and arms, which was a nice distraction.

26 seconds per mile slower on the second 5K

  • Dammit, what watch are you using? I'm contemplating getting a decent running watch and would really
Like somethig that plots my route.

  • Forerunner 305

  • Right 49 minutes to beat Tommorrow morning. Bare in mind I've got roads/hills/angry geese to contend with on my route

305 is pretty good, you can get it for very little on Amazon/eBay if you do a bit of digging.

Nice thing is that it has a bike mount also, so you can use it for rides with a GSC-10.

I like the nerdy uploading/checking out averages and maximums.

The 10K I did today or example- my heart rate averaged about 20 bpm above my last attempt at the same distance, and 10 above the one before that.

    Good luck!

Be nice to get some competition going, I look forward to seeing your time tomorrow.

  • ^^^ tomd - attempting 10k @ 40s per mile quicker after pb couple days before suggests you've not been trying previously. seriously.

build steady, so you don't do yourself a mischief.

  • apologies if sounding grumpy, voice of painful experience, and not sure how to word it fluffily for the forum.

  • I need to cut 53 seconds per mile out of my 10K, not really sure how to do that.

    I know I can run at 7 min/mile, but I don't think I could maintain it for 10K.

I suspect if I tried I'd blow up and end up doing the last 2K at 9.5 min/mile, if that.

  • I still don't get this multiquote system so:

@ Dammit - 48.28. Last hill was a killer though.

@ rhb - To be honest up until this point I haven't really been pushing myself on the longer runs - I've never even been aiming to beat my PB - Just been jogging at a comfortable pace for a reasonable distance, been pretty lax about it. I've knocked decent time off my shorter runs so I know I can run at a faster pace - Just didn't think it would be sustainable over a longer distance. Turns out it is, to an extent - Just needed a goal to aim for.

Oh and trust me, I know the grumpy, voice of painful experience well, I've been getting various advice from my uncle whose 50 and just been running in the world masters championship in Sacremento.

  • Challenge accepted, lets see where we can get to shaving 30 seconds off each run.

It's gym tonight then run tomorrow, might do a fast 5K and leave the 10K attempt a few days though.

  • What's that in proper money?

  • 48.55 for 10K this afternoon.

that's close to my best time from last year. did the mo-running 10k in greenwich park in 48:32 but the hills were a bit of a bastard on that route.

On friday I'd been worried about a slight pull in my groin that happened whilst cycling home on thursday so I opted to leave the bike at home. on the train back after work I felt like I had ants in my pants and was massively restless so when I got in for the first time in a good few months I chucked on my running kit and went out for a run.

Now I knew I was going to have to ease myself back into it so the plan was to run a rough approximation of my old 5k loop through greenwich park so I just did that trying not to go too fast that i'd struggle or get a stitch or whatever.

fuck me, all of the good things about running from last year flooded back and I drifted round the park like I was bouncing on an air cushion. I wasn't timing myself but I would say it was still sub 30min. but it's definitely rekindled my running spark. the goal now is to get back up to decent 10k running fitness and drop some of the weight I've gained back since I stopped so I can run to work once or twice a week. this would also probably push me over the edge of deciding to get a brompton on C2W when I'm elligible in Oct so I can alternate between cycling in and running home and running in and cycling home without leaving my bike looked up in the dodgy bike shed at work.

  • Some back of an envelope calculations show that if I could maintain the pace that I did the first 5K in then I'd have finished in 47.53, which is interesting.

I'll alternate 5k with intervals this week and have another crack at 10k on Sunday.

  • tomd - makes sense, good time now and be interesting to see how you & all progress bringing times down further
