Pubs probably but Saturday could mean long wait for food. Canal route is 200ft less climbing but 10 extra miles more than offsets that, plus the significant lump on the road route near Stoke might well be avoidable with a bit of canal path.

Nice one, looks like a good set of events. I wonder that 'Escape from' might move start in future years with one in Scotland at some point (it'd make sense if this one successful).

Utterly tragic news from Aldershot last night. Two young club members were killed while out on a training run.
Be careful on the roads.

Saw that - shit, shit news. Currently running with a red LED (Blackburn Flea) on my bag, but need something similar on the front - any suggestions as the Flea front light isn't a clip-on type.

The Million mile light maybe?

Nice idea, thanks. But I think I'll bodge a 99p safety LED to my bag and just angle it at a way to illuminate myself.

Actually, just bought these instead for a tenner:

Yes its super quirky, has a nice element of insanity about it. Anyone seen the Berklay Marathons film?

On the Barkley front, this is a good read.
http://batgirldaily.blogspot.co.uk/2016/04/they-say-gate-is-yellow.htmlWith just a few finishers at best each year, it's guaranteed to be a daunting day out... now think about trying it without the luxury of sight!

Interesting and humbling. I must learn to whinge less and appreciate stuff I take for granted.

And some positive news to end the week. COngratulation to @philpub's girlfriend. A tremendous 3rd at the IAU 50km championships in Qatar. Crack out the champagne.

Berklay Marathons film?
Nope but keep hearing good things. Must watch.
Colleague reminded me EfM is end of season fun race for me after the srs business of DtD (i'd said apparently) so I should chill and enjoy longer scenic canal route. Hmmm...

Champers, flowers and choccies and beer, minimum. I'm absolutely chuffed for her! :) She ran 50km in 3:26, running through marathon distance in about 2:53. In the desert. I think Team GB got gold in the team comp as well.

Congrats to Philpub's gf!

I ran down to work (5.8km), had an hour long meeting then tried to run home, walked the last km or so. I forgot that I've not run once in the last nine months so now my legs are completely fucked. Any ideas on how to fix them? I feel like a dalek avoiding stairs.
I've got a foam roller and the ability to stretch.
Incidentally I've been doing pretty intense intervals on the turbo for the last two months (as opposed to Swains reps and longer intervals at lower cadence like last year). Previously the first few runs of the season gave me tight calfs but this time all the muscle pain is in the quads. Have I changed the physiology of my legs through training?

Okay.

That's why. You can't go from not running at all, to doing 10 kms and expect to walk away without any issues. Your body has adapted to cycling so introducing running needs to be done gradually.
When I did this (I raced a 6 km corporate challenge thing with no running training whatsoever) I could barely walk the day after. The thing that helped me best to recover was a gentle spin on the bike.

Excellent news, thanks. I'm currently hiding from the rain doing a recovery TrainerRoad session.
An hour at 50% FTP is wack.

That's some achievement 😀

Back on planet normal, a fun day of XC on Farthing Downs today (Surrey League div 1, match 2), and second blood to @juanito who pipped me to the 10th scoring position for the club. Great run and the team won comfortably, closing 10 inside top 50 (juanito 44th, I was 51st) to go top of the league. I was definitely giving it full beans, but thankfully feel pretty OK now which is handy since I'm doubling up with the Epsom 10 mile (road) race tomorrow. 40 mile round trip on the bike to get there and back will make it something of a brick session.
Any good pubs on canal route? My worry would be less shops than on road, canal footpath intuitively sounds flatter though.
