  • Anyone doing the Richmond Marathon on Sunday? It's the inaugural marathon addition to the Richmond Runfest which also features a 10k and a half marathon. I volunteered to be the sub-3 pacer, which seemed like a good idea a couple of months ago. Then I went on bike tour holiday for three weeks in Aug/early Sept - 800 miles covered between North Oregon and San Francisco, fantastic fun - and now I'm a bit nervous about my lack of running. Me and MsPub did actually manage 55 miles of running in that time, in Vancouver, Seattle, San Fran and a couple of points along the Pacific coast, but I've only done one run over 15 miles in the last seven weeks.

I'm reasonably confident in getting the job done but I think it's gonna hurt.

  • Is anybody else here badly affected by heat? Ran at lunchtime yesterday and today. Crawled across the line yesterday and just gave up today after my HR hit 175 after a mile where I'd normally expect it to be around 145bpm.

I'm feeling otherwise well, just can't seem to put a decent run together. I've not had any problems running in 30 degrees before but it has been quite a few years since I last did it.

  • So theres Nice Nice little local jog about I may sign up for.

I'm finding it tricky to quanify how tough this will be. My overall Fitness will cope. My legs wouldnt if it was flat tarmac. But may cope With undulating offroading.

    Should I?

Really think it'd be Worth atempting. Dont want to fuck my bike season though.

  • I wilt in heat, being a pasty ginger.

    Think about:

Lower your relative intensity and don't be afraid to walk if it helps.

    Suncream, hat.

Shady routes, e.g trails under tree canopy.

Time of day - run early or late.

How well hydrated are you before run, during and after.

  • I've had a bit of time to read up on this and I think your're spot on.

I'm going to drink some water and go out and have another crack. Even if it takes 11 minute miles or I have to walk I'm getting today ticked off.

    Cheers for advice.

  • Yes running in this heat sucks- just wearing my short shorts atm

  • I'm alright in heat, although it's only around 20c max at the mo - it's the humidity that does me in.

The perspiration - it does nothing!

  • Nice one, hope you got it done ok.

Also for future, run near water if possible (apparently has a cooling effect).

  • Thanks all. Went out and got it done. It was a struggle but I did it. My HR was right up after only a couple of miles. Took a short walk to get it down again and did intervals for the rest of the run. Felt like shit.

    Hardest run in years.

  • ^ You got it done though.

I'm stuck under a bridge in the biggest thunder storm in memory not long into my run. Had lightening strike so close when above ground the noise was with the flash and all alarms set off. Glad i was near canal.

Pic no justice to how grim / spectacular this is!

  • It's so grim, got in just as it started.

First run in ages on Sunday has killed my legs, been hobbling round work the last couple of days :(

  • Taking advice from you seems like a painful road to head down.

I've invited a mate over for it now though. So I'm almost locked in.

  • I was under the bridge an hour. Sacked run off went to get tram at n.Islington got to deansgate no trams my way. Run back on thankfully no incidents.

Hope your legs are ok tomorrow, sounds like DOMS so 2nd day normally the worst...

  • This looks good fun, enjoy.

  • Train hard race easy..

  • The tooting 24hr track race is on this weekend, going to go along in the twilight hours to distribute coffee and junk food to a friend. Running for so long on a track is mental cruelty in extremis.

  • My mate Neil Kapoor is doing it - would usually fancy him to win, but he's not been running much recently. I may pop down at some stage too.

  • I was under the bridge an hour.

You're going to have a shower when you get home anyway, so why wouldn't you run in the rain?

  • Thunderbolt, lightning, very very frightening?

  • Was sheltering from lightning not the rain.

It did raise the question of what i'd do if similar thunder on race night, not many bridges on the Limestone Way.

  • Yeah. I got planned double run day done eventually as public transport failed but before then had decided I'd had enough for the day.

  • Neil Kapoor! There's a name I've not heard for a while. We were once team mates, part of a 12-runner, 48-hour treadmill Guinness World Record set in the window display of what was then Lillywhites (Sports Direct) in Piccadilly, in 2008. Which is small-fry compared to some of his endurance efforts, which from memory include a Deca-Ironman. The man's a machine!

  • He's a very classy ultrarunner. He's also done Spartathlon, Badwater, Arch2Arc and is currently training for the 6633 (350 miles in the Arctic). We did a 2-man Channel swim a few years back.

  • Ran my first sub 50min 10k today. It's not going to set the world on fire but pretty monumental for me.
