  • I tripped on a paving slab running home from work last night and twisted my ankle. Heard/felt it pop. A nice man came over and checked I was ok, so my faith in humanity is restored and all but it's really swollen and bruised, and hurts a fair bit. Marathon in 16 days. I can't even walk properly. FUCKSAKE.

  • i found wrapping my ankle in tape using a figure-8 wrap when it got sprained playing basketball helped keep the swelling down massively and supported it when I had to walk on it.

  • it did make the bruising go mental as it pushed the blood to the surface though.

  • I might have to wear gloves

    No.

  • Ouch! :( Don't panic. I've twisted my ankle massively in the past and despite it being impossible to walk on properly the next day, and swelling up like mad, it was runnable within a few days. Taper period isn't such a bad time for enforced rest, even if it's never ideal. As and when you feel up to trying out a short jog, be very cautious and stick to even surfaces as the damaged ligaments will leave the ankle feeling weaker for a time, and you don't want to be going over on it again.

  • Raynaud's? This winter has been particularly bad for numbness for me.

  • @HatBeard Good idea, I'll get some tape at lunchtime. At the moment I have my foot resting on top of a large cardboard box and my colleagues are making me tea, so things aren't so bad.

@PhilPub Thank you, this is very reassuring! My bf and his similarly naysaying friend last night were saying I definitely needed to pull out but I was secretly hoping that I'd have enough time. Good idea to put some thought into running on even surfaces - the pavements are generally in terrible nick so looks like I'll head to the smooth loveliness that is dulwich park.

  • On the gloves debate: I'm voting yes.

  • @hats get this one from boots. once you wrap it it stays on by itself and is pretty comfortable. plus it's pretty easy to remove and reapply if you're careful.

  • Yeah, I've managed to contain it fairly well this winter with a pair of silk gloves from Decathlon (surprisingly effective and the best £5 I've ever spent) and a hair dryer, but I'm always getting caught out here and there.

My flag-holster backpack has a couple of handy mesh pockets, so if it's a bit nippy at the start I can see me lining up in the pen with a pair of gloves and a beanie.

@hats - Good idea. Just give those pesky kids on recumbent bikes a wide berth.

  • i used a technique similiar to this one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4gLlwTk7aM

  • in fact it was exactly this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrmfrFqzQbA

  • Yeah, that'd be a circumstance I think folks could be miffed about the outcome.

  • Great video. I did this exact wrap and it's already feeling a lot better. It's still swollen and bruised but I can actually walk today.

Plus I found the best bandage in the world!

  • Mueller make ankle supports that are the best. Expensive but with multiple sprains both sides there's no way I could run in rough terrain without them.
    Chiltern Challenge tommorrow.
    Good luck anyone in London

  • Good luck all!

  • What have I done? Why am I here? I feel so under-prepared.

  • Good luck everyone! Enjoy it.

  • There is actually a serious side to why I'm running today. I'm raising money for St Peter's Hospice in Bristol who provide care to adults with serious illnesses and helped my friend Laura who died of stomach cancer last year (she was only 28). I know asking strangers on the internet for money isn't really the done thing, but https://www.justgiving.com/lozzysmarathon/ is the link if you'd like to make a donation.

This thread is one of the things that has kept me running, thanks everyone and stay awesome forum!

  • Good luck. Don't go out too quick and ruin your day with a silly first mile or 5k. Enjoy it.

  • Good luck today everyone! I'm off to mile 11 to get my cheer on. Race reports afterwards please!!

  • Good luck all. will be keeping an eye out for as many as possible. will be at 7/14/22. pace it steadily until the embankment when you can stretch it out.

  • Run done in time to catch Mara. Hope an lfgss runner is the millionth ever finisher.

In other news. Think my hrm defo kaput, apparently I'm averaging 168 bpm at 9.30 min mile pace (over 15mins) and 173bpm at sub 7 min mile (over 8mins). None of my recent runs have shown any hrm variance around pace changes, plus always record a silly max number (as high as 220+)

    Strap battery most likely?

  • Fucked heart, you'll need to get it removed asap
