Cheers RHB, I took your advice about setting out slower this evening, and it was much easier, even though I felt I was going really slowly. It took ages to pass pedestrians!
Will think about telling him to do one, but I fear it may get competitive at work tomorrow...
Nice one. If you're going the right effort, you should be able to make polite conversation as you pass folks.
If it gets competitive, you need to go Bill and Ted on him.

Nah, they're all runners. Just model-esque in stature.

so i managed to drag myself though my first sprint tri with a rather stately 30 min run. i know it's stupidly slow but considering i only started running in february i'm pretty happy with myself. am going to sign up for an olympic length tri for september i think. want to be doing 10k+ by then and sub 25 min 5ks by my next sprint in august. onwards and upwards and all that.

congrats to you.
tough stuff multisports and requires dedication that most folks dont have -

I did the wet test last night - turns out I have really high arches. Just a ball at the heel and another one at the forefoot. So I've ordered an appropriate pair of cheap trainers online. They'll miraculously make me loads fitter, right? Right?

Now, what distances are fair? I can hardly run, but even a novice cyclist can move fairly quickly.
Help?!I'd aim for a 6km run and a 30km ride.
If you go higher than this remember that running is more destructive. So maybe 10km run and 55km ride.I did the wet test last night - turns out I have really high arches. The main difference between running and cycling is the destructive nature of running. Well selected shows reduces this and is vital.

In other news I did some swimming last night. Actually thought about technique. I may be able to swim more than 500m without drowning after all.
hmmmmm....tri's

That's what I worry about - my knees are already creaky at 28 - is running a good idea?

Run to work Friday today.
I still don't enjoy it.
Bikes are so much faster and easier - FACT. -

Probably should have checked earlier. But I've been running on this all week. No wonder I'm in pain. Was kicked just above the ankle on Saturday.
Ice + rest = OK for half marathon on saturday?
Feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck, feck!

Even with decent trainers running on tarmac is destructive.
I've said this on every page, and RW mention it alot too. But try running off-road. Less destructive, and a more benifical work-out, as you need to constantly vary stride.

Taken 3 efforts to get back in the stride. two weeks out with a busy schedule - including a heavy stag weekend and as much smoking as i could fit in to a week before quitting again.
Had no rhythm and fought it all the way, like starting from scratch. i might check that runners world site for tips. decided to do the paris Marathon next year

I can't fucking run.
My first run was on March 18. Two months now. I've had to take two weeks off because of a fucked knee. Just started running again this week. First run I had to stop about 1.5km in because I could feel the knee getting a bit upset (tightening up). Today, I had to stop about 2.5k in because of a different knee pain (or same pain, just localized slightly lower?). This is after having shin problems when first starting. Three weeks ago I was doing 5ks without much of an issue. I can tell my fitness has improved, but I can't do anything with it. Soooo frustrating.

I've had running shoes the entire time. Bought some new ones just before the knee blew out. Got a couple good runs in (broke my 5k record) and the shin problems seemed to disappear, then boom. Two weeks of limping.
It didn't help that the only break I took was from running. I was still cycling and playing polo (which often ends with me flying off my bike and landing on an extended leg).
-
• #1297
did you get a fitting done? shoewhisperer etc, or at runners need?
Not that I know much about running but good shoes seems a must. Also do the laces up pretty tight*, made my last run a lot more comfortable after reading it somewhere
*perhaps someone clued up could give some actually good advice?
-
• #1298
Runnersneed treadmill test. They basically gave me a shoe that was very similar to the one I had before (which was also from a Runnersneed after a gait test). Maybe a bit more support than the previous one. I overproante quite badly.
-
• #1299
I don't actually tighten my laces that tight. They're tight. Just not hockey skate tight.

Probable cause and effect there. Hope you're back on it soon, maybe a physio worth seeing, identify root cause etc?
They (the cover pictures) sell a reality that just isn't achievable for 99%. The alternative (a pic of someone like me vomiting at the end of the Sutton Park Relays) wouldn't shift many units though...
