  • Heh, I don't think it's as much a measured course as a "this is really close, lets use it" course.

I'll still try to crack 20 minutes for the actual course however.

  • My watch is trolling me:

  • What does it base that on?

  • Magnets.

  • It's based, as far as I know, on heart rate and pace.

  • My watch is trolling me:

Obviously another malfunctioning Fenix II. Sell the bike Send it back.

  • I'll take it off you. £50 as it's now used.

  • The replacement is a huge improvement - I am a fan again I am afraid.

  • I've done dulwich parkrun many times and all but one time I've measured it as being slightly short. And I start quite far back... HTH.

  • Interesting. Maybe next time I shall run with one of those surveyors wheel-on-stick measuring devices.

  • Trundle Wheel

  • Forerunner 110 watch on Wimbledon Common parkrun (I usually start 10m back or so):-

    5.01km, 5.04km, 5.01km, 5.01km, 4.98km, 5.00km

GPSes aren't that great at accurately measuring distance covered. There's a reasonable margin for error on each point recorded and so adding up distances between individual points only goes to compound these errors.

Pretty sure the courses would have been originally designed and measured using a trundle wheel and then each week they use the same start/finish points.

  • I've just looked back and I have 5.1 and 5.1, different Garmin watch for each. Trundle wheel it is !

  • Really tough conditions for Llanelli 1/2 this morning with a really strong wind coming in off the estuary.

Really wanted sub 1:26 to feel like I was on track for sub 3 in London but it just wasn't going to happen in that wind. I'm reasonably happy with 1:26:52 and it gives me a bit of confidence going into San Domenico 20 miler next weekend.

  • It was going well upto 3/4 distance. Incredibly technical descents on jelly legs finished me off I dropped 40 (!) places finished 74/135.

Much nicer than most road 10k's, will be back for more.

  • Pretty satisfied with today's run. The plan was to do 1:45 at Level 2 (5:00/km on the road).

I ended up doing 21.1km in 1:46, which works out pretty much spot on 5:00/km but that also means I was probably working a bit harder than planned since the route was 90% off road, with lots of gates/styles and some pretty soggy bits. Lots to be positive about, especially since today was my longest run this year and I felt pretty comfortable.

As @Jones, I'd tentatively like 3hours at London but since all my training is off road I find it a bit hard to judge how much faster I'll go on tarmac.

  • and another one who was hoping for a confidence boost in london training but had a bit of a shocker in Cambridge. Could NOT get my legs turning over. Decent ehadwinds and quite a twisty turny course made it all a bit of a struggle. https://www.strava.com/activities/264972987

Can someone techy explain exactly why strava gets it so wrong on my overall time and the headline minutes per mile, but in the half marathon personal best gets my time almost to the second? thanks.

  • Ooof if that's a bad day what's a good ?

  • Respect, that's a decent pace whether you're looking at the 1:12 or 1:15. And top 10 to boot.
Strava / Garmin inaccuracies seem to be par for the course .

  • What's the verdict on training, with a cold?

7 weeks till London , and I can't seem to shake this damn cold. I've had nearly 3 weeks off now but managed a 6 and a 10 during the week. Was aiming for 16 today, but had to stop at 10, feeling proper achy.

    Is rest best...?

  • Congrats! It was pretty horrendous out there. According to my watch I finished in 1:36:56 which is a PB for me by 1 second!

I was quite surprised to be honest as I was off my sort of imaginary theoretical target pace by mile 3 and gave up on the idea of being quick, then realised at 10 miles that if I picked up the pace a bit I might be able to PB. Waiting on an official time though...

  • feeling proper achy.

    Rest.

If the only effect is sniffle/sneezes then I train, owt more than that (e.g gunky coughs, aches etc) then it's not worth making it worse.

  • I wear Helly Hansen running T's: they keep skin off skin under the arms. If I wear a vest, particularly in warmer weather, I suffer badly.

  • Well done, a p.b in those conditions has to be a good effort :)
