first marathon? take it steady until mile 20 then see how you feel.
you could double your half time and add 15 mins to set a reasonable goal, assuming you've done adequate training.
good luck.
+1 it's a lot easier to take it easy and speed up, rather than blowing up at 20 and then desperately digging just to finish the thing...
-
• #1006
borrow a garmin off someone to run with so you can keep an eye on your pacing
don't use technology as a crutch, if it stops working you're pooped. write down some key split targets and memories or even carry with you.

I've mentioned this before. But starting slowly should mean you get to spend the race overtaking people. Which is a massive mental boost.

also worth remembering not to mouth breathe when you pass

I prefer going of a bit fast at the start holding a steady pace then putting the gas on at the end, 1st mile is done before you realise so there's only really 12 to go.

As posted above start slow. An extra 30s per km for the first 3/4 km's is'nt going to kill your time.
Both half and full marathon runners started at the same time on my last full marathon. I placed myself with some half runners and felt OK, if a little pushed, at their pace. I thought I was going to beat my PB, untill my body colapsed at 23 miles. Could have been for any number of reasons but I feel it was a case of too fast too soon.
Use this calculator to use your half time to calculate a full time.
http://www.liebreich.com/LDC/HTML/Various/RunCalculator.htmlYour 20miles in 2:46, gives a marathon time of 3:44. But you cant really compare a racing time with a training time. Your half marathon time will be a more accurate measure. FWIW 3:30 is my (slightly ambitous) target time, and I doubt I could call a 2:46 - 20mile run 'comfortable'.
Once you have your target use the 'mile split times' to keep you on target during the race.
I might be exagerating to call it comfortable! more that i felt i could have gone if necessary and better than the 3 previous 20 milers I've done. Someone i know is running in the same race and he's about 9 min faster over 20 miles than me, i don't want to run with him if I'm going to run out of juice before the end.

I put sand in my trainers and fill my ears with water then plug them up with earplugs with so it always feels like I'm running on a beach with the sounds of waves gently crashing around me.

just did first run of week two, only walked three times, and felt good about it, hoping by the time I get to last run of week three I'll be able to run the whole 3.5k without stopping.
Calves still ache, but not as much, and not over as large an area, and the running still felt a bit up and down, and towards the end it felt like I was just dragging my feet along, but all in all, kinda happy.weird but when I run I don't seem to think at all, about anything, suppose I'm concentrating so much on getting to my next walking point, that my mind switches itself off...

same here, really like the empty head
good job keeping up the running. I'm running silly slow to be able to run the 3k, tried to up the pace a bit last time but it takes so much more energy so went back to shuffling

Went for a run last night for the first time since last August. 10k. All the screws in my left leg ache like bejasus, and my calves are a bit tight. Otherwise mostly OK.
It's amazing how something so aerobically unchallenging (wasn't going too fast) can create such discomfort the next day.
Think I might try and do a run a week for a bit and see if things improve.
