  • I just looking for some advice, on what to wear for cold and wet rides. Up to now I have worn jeans, but they seem to chafe, and aren't good in the wet.

I'm looking to get some bib-shorts for the summer, but I'm just wondering what would be good for the winter/spring. I have loads of normal shorts, so maybe just some leg warmers, or tights (possibly padded), but I could look at getting some padded cycling shorts (loose, not lycra), along with either tights or leg warmers.

I'm just a bit confused as there are so many options, and I've never really bought anything like it before.

  • If you are scared to rock the lycra look just wear them under some normal loose shorts. Loose padded shorts don't work that well.

In cool weather leg warmers are good but need to be paired with lycra shorts to help keep them up, they are also nice and small / light to carry if the weather is changeable. In colder weather still I like ron hill trackster / bikester + padded shorts underneath I feel the need for the padding.

In town tend to bother though and just wear jeans and get wet. (13 miles each way commute for reference)

  • After growing tired of the fact of no jeans/casual trousers fitting & being comfortable to ride in I succumbed to cross-dressing and bought myself some jeggings.

The fit is incredible, but it turns out Im a little too "bootylicious" as my legs/arse totally looks like Beyonce or something.

I think for the sake of common decency, they shall have to go back.

Cheers, that sounds like good advice, so if I get some padded tights, that should do it I guess.

  • on sale here

  • Or you could check out the swrve winter trousers. They are awesomely good.

The other things I wear are the Endura bib tights that are fleeced an waterproof.

These can often be too warm, however.

  • Has anybody here tried Ronhill Tracksters?

    Need some sizing advice.

  • Dredge alert!

I want to get some tights with a pad for winter, not really into bibs. I've seen giordana do a nice pair but are these warm? Any other recommendations?

Also, I was wondering about layering. Should one wear tights or Merino leggings above or underneath padded shorts?

  • Bib tights are super awesome and are making my winter a lot more bearable.

  • +1 best purchase of the winter so far. I got some off fleecey lined ones off probikekit reduced from £70 odd to £33, bargain.

  • I got some Wapha ones in the sample sale. £40 and pretty essential with weather like this

A short list that I compiled, as I'm in the market for some:

Those shouty ones Planet-x are selling look like good value. Decent pad and super roubaix fabric.

They do two, but I cant tell the difference in the pads.

These campag raytechs look good. But Im not sure what Vuelta fabric is. Is it the same as super roubaix?

Like the design of these Northwaves.

Sportful NO RAIN seems like a nice idea, but I'm a bit sceptical.

IXS Dorado claim to be windproof and water proof.

Currently at the top of my list, but might be overkill for the UK

    JacksonH recommended these DHB

I seriously recommend bibs, as they are far more comfortable and overlap nicely with your top layer. If you get a winter weight pair, made from super roubaix or something similar (fleece lined lycra). Then a merino under layer should'nt be needed. I quite like the type with wind protection, but this does usually stiffen the tight.

  • Just ordered some Nrothwave Pulse padded roubaix new £35 delivered from Fleabag, RRP £70. Should be nice. Can't justify Assos for that difference in price.

  • bib 3/4 tights with long sealskins
    or
the full monty with the long bibs and any socks you want,
    either way,
they are super comfortable and give you unrestricted insulation and comfort on the bike.
bought some for the 1st time recently and can't complain, in comparison to leg warmers they are far superior.

Pay particular attention to the pad, for if they are badly stitched and not feathered in on they edges they are certainly going to chaff and hurt.
I learnt to my disappointment with my first bib tights (Santini) :( I might have to modify these to feather the edges of the pad.
Other than that they are excellent quality, a crying shame.

  • Nice one for all the tips. Will have a gander at some bibs later this week...

Those are what I've been using for a year or so and couldn't be happier with them.

  • wish I could afford the gore ones..

I've got the Roubaix dhb ones and they are absolutely fine for everything except below -5.
Pad not the best in the world (these are from last year, think this year has a diff pad), but still completely fine for long rides, and in terms of value for money they are awesome.

  • does anyone have any leads for cheap water resistant tights that have no pad and are not bib?

Might be worth looking at running tights. I have some reasonablywater resistant Salmon tights, that I picked up cheap from one of those chav superstores.

  • ^^ This. Racks upon racks of the things in my local Sports Direct.

Thats the store I was thinking of.

Worth trying to get a quality pair in a sale, as opposed to a budget pair. Cycling is pretty harsh on seams.

  • cheers only one i can think of is i oxford st plaza, will check it out
