robo dredge - Can't recommend Smartwool merino socks enough (all varieties) - they will transform your life! If they were cheaper I would never wear anything other so called 'sock' again
Would be great to receive socks at Christmas if they were theses

Prendas winter socks are so good I'm considering buying more pairs to wear full time.
Edit: although it pains me to buy less than 3 pairs at once and spend over £5.

Are there any socks that are fairly long, almost football sock length? Might be useful in this weather as I wear 3/4 length baggies with lycra underneath.

Proper ski socks. Or Craft cross country ski socks.

Proper ski socks. Or Craft cross country ski socks.
This every time.
Frankly better than the most advanced cycling socks, only difference is that they can be a smite thicker.

Right- I've got everything else sorted apart from my feet- they still turn into corpse feet (numb, yellow/white) after ~1 hour of cycling in this weather.
Scanning back through this thread SealSkinz socks get a strong recommendation, is that still the prevailing view?
I've been wearing Woolie Boolie's in Lake CX 145 boots.

Give the DeFeet Slipstream a try and wear it as a sock instead (over normal one if necessary).

I just want to give a massive thumbs up to the Rapha Pro Team socks. They are delightful.

These are the best socks I've ever owned. Either in freezing conditions on the bike or while wearing my steel toe-cap boots in the workshop, they're the shit. Very thick though, so they might not fit in your normal cycling shoes. I'm so delighted to have found them on ebay that I thought I'd share with the group. I may need to get out more.

OK - what socks for winter riding? Need something slightly less thick than @dbr's recommendation. Rapha Winter Socks any good?
-

Just bought some Smartwool medium weight hiking merinos, they're the nuts.

Prendas socks have served me well.

Nordic skiing socks FTW.
I bet you could get some of that infamous spamming sports store. They always seem to be full Norwegianski/ wool brands
-

Surely thick wool socks can't be the best to ride in though? Soak up swear and hamper shoe-fit?
-

Rapha winter socks aren't very good.
Long cuff defeet wooly booties are excellent: warm, comfortable and keep smells at bay - only slight downside is they are a little thick, but I've never had a problem. I wear them all the time off the bike too.
Would also recommend second sf's shout for high end Nordic ski socks as they are thick and thin in the right places.

This sock thread is altogether too practical. Is there another thread? I'm looking to do some serious sock doping.
Just found The Athletic, and I like.

Before I duckduckgo/google this, is there such a thing as windproof socks?
Midfoot setup stops me using most shoe covers but I always used to be a fan of the toe covers that stopped air flow through vented shoes - wonder if you can do the same thing with socks. Used to use sandwich bags but they didn't seem to make much difference. Full winter shoes were the answer but I'm looking to warm my normal shoes a tad.
