ask todd, he is the man with the dog's head on a stick.

  • he said he got it from die schweiz!

  • Hmmm, not good with languages... paticularly german... is that the same as "la Suisse"? If so I'll have to do some french googling in the hope it turns up!

  • Switzerland.

  • Please continue posting positivity for beginners on this thread.

I've moved the last 27 posts about contact and rules to what I feel is the relevent thread here:

  • Good call Mike.

Polo's ace, come and try it !!

  • i think todd put it quite well.

Everyone has the right attitude and nobody (in an obvious way) thinks they're better than anyone else. I'm new to the game. Only been playing a couple of months and they've all been so supportive. And in that time I've been injured badly over and over!
That's either to do with my willingness to get stuck in, or my clumsiness mixed with a bit of inexperience. But seriously, you get out of the game what you put in.
All those guys are like extended family.

It's important for the future of the game for other people to get involved.

    To New People:
Even if you turn up on your own and just say hello you'll be welcomed. You can even borrow a bike and a mallet for a quick game.

  • chic's or blokes we don't care. come one come all.

Liar, you're all about the men.

    +1000. Come one, come all.

  • I love the google link for downham... it's teaching me another language...

I love that walking in spanish seems to be a pie! :-)

  • all the wednesday night court links go to a building next to vauxhall park - c'mon rik, sort it out

  • I have sort this link 3 or 4 times in the past.
I have change now the format to see if any better
Please let me know any one if they get crazy again

  • I've read on here somewhere that cutting across the player with the ball is a no-no. I can't get my head around this. Does this mean that if the player with the ball is coming towards me, the defender, I can't cross his line, forcing him the stop or deviate. I can only go up the side and try and get the ball?

As you may be able to tell, I'm new to Polo and haven't got all the rules yet.

    Ta,

  • You can maintain a position in front of the player (although this can cost you wheels - fucking James Brown), or come beside them and "push" them off line. You cannot come directly across in such a way that will force them to run into you, or run into them. Come play and watch and you'll get it.

  • Come play and watch and you'll get it.

I'm in Manchester, have played a couple of games but the 'rules' are new at the moment.

But what you say makes sense. Cheers.

  • Played my first real game of polo last night, fuck it was good, had a rad time. Swapped down to 42/19 and the gear felt perfect. Was a bit disappointed tho as out of 30 players only 4 were on fixed gears (In Melbourne Australia). Reckon im gonna build up a proper polo bike from here so mine doesnt get too beat up.

  • My guess is that the majority if polo players in the world ride freewheel. At least most of the teams in North American cities do. Not sure about where the balance is in Europe yet. Will be interesting to see at the upcoming tournies this spring and summer.

  • Ah ok, i see it as a disadvantage riding freewheel, when the play gets congested they all rely on the mallet to stay on two wheels while i can trackstand and still swing plus reverse out of corners.
Back in Perth everyone played on fixed gears.
