  • I wouldn't be too concerned about leg length vs crank lenght. The only possible reason for restricting crank length (apart from possible pedal strike) is knee damage. The gears that we pull in polo are nothing like even half-way big enough to put even moderate strain on the knees.

  • On the topic of pedal strike, I think this can be discounted. I messengered for years on 175 fixed, and wasn't putting my foot down all that much. If you're using clipless, you shouldn't have a problem.

  • i get pedal strike on my 14 with 175 cranks and shimano m520 pedals sometimes when i take super duper tight turns, it sucks

Don't pedal through the apex. Simples.

  • Yes H-Bomb! MP!

  • How tall are you?

6 foot, my BB IS pretty high though, think i went for 15mm drop in the end so will give it a go

  • john, I'll take whatever you scrap from the pomp >:o

  • Pedalling through turns is sometimes necessary for staying ahead of the next man, particularly when you've lost posession and are trying to quash an emerging break.

I run 175s with boggo SPDs, and have pedal struck about twice, but it's the fear of pedal strike, not fear of losing traction, which limits the fastness/tightness of my turns.

  • I think what you lose on the very few occasions that you have to freewheel, you will gain 100 times over in straight line acceleration. But don't let me stop you from going to shorter cranks.

  • Middle burn cranks are so boss. Any excuse!

  • john, I'll take whatever you scrap from the pomp >:o

It's not going to be soon. I might even keep it as it is, anyway, as a spare. Once I've got the other one built up we can see what you still need.

  • Trend prediction for 2012: Middleburn cranks.

170+mm second-hand RS7s will be a good investment for shifting this summer season, 50% ROI?

Buy UNO chainring rip-offs from the US in bulk, corner the market.

  • More like RS8 X-Types with 4 bolt attachment, small ring and bash. 170's.
    Cassette rear hubs.

  • Nah, bashguards are so 2010.

  • Dead weight.

  • It's rotational weight so it'll be slowing your acceleration

  • i dont think i am quicker on 170's than i was on 152's .. but it is nicer to ride to the court.

  • It's rotational weight so it'll be slowing your acceleration

Fair point, maybe it is worth not having one.

I don't care if the chainring gets fucked, I'm more worried about fingers getting into the chain.

  • Don't tinker with your chainring mid-game and you should be fine.

  • I meant in crashes...

  • "Guys, I know my chain's pretty, but stop trying to steal it mid-game, yeah?"

  • I guess though once the fingers are in a bashguard isn't going to help much.

  • I think you have a weird fear thing going on here John... a bit like Adam's fear of touching his eyeball.

  • Who touches their eyeball. That's weird.

  • Argh. Eyeball touching is wrong.
