if you're using "standard" spds then you're probably using multi-release cleats. Single release cleats only unclip in one direction.

the problem solver has a problem with the running of teh cables, plus the main cable going to the lever is just hold by a 2mm screw, the black one you can see in the pic
Em and Gabes both use it and they both change to double brake levers
On the contrary, Mark and Mike both run them with no problems.
The only major downside i see, is if one cable goes, both your brakes go.

Is there a reason I don't see many of these as the solution to dual braking? I see many fabricated dualpull levers but not this, is it mostly down to expense?
Mike hasn't mentioned any issues with it yet??? Though I was a little unconvinced by how smooth greased anodised aluminium sliding inside the same would be.. it is neat, if a little costly IMO.
rrrik - Was it adjustability or slippage that put off em and gabes?
em / gabes - comments? -

I don't think so. Multi-release are far less common, and only come with single-sided touring-style pedals. You can buy them separately, though, obviously. They're silver too. They are supposed to release in various directions (i think variations of 'sideways' up to but not including 'upwards'). I usually sell them to people who are very nervous about using SPDs. Never considered using them until now.

Thanks Snoops, I'm going to try some out.

They're very common.
SH56, and mostly gold from what I've seen.
Edit: SH55 are silver. -

Yeah the single cable snapping eventuality does bother me to be honest, as I have built my polobike to also be my commuter. Don't wanna be going to work one day and have that hilarity bestowed upon me.

They're commonly available, but in my experience, hardly anyone uses them.

I was under the impression that most shimano MTB SPD pedals came with multirelease cleats (the silver ones) as standard, at least mine always have, thus the switch to single release (black) was a vast improvement.
-
• #4339
depends on the pedals you buy which cleats come with them

Im cheap, which probably explains it.

And Frog-Aussie Nick.
I do think a dual lever is superior though.

from my research yesterday, single release shimano cleats come with the majority of pedals. when i was trying to buy some multi release yesterday I had to ring around a fair few stores to find somewhere with a pair of multi release for sale. most said they would 'order in'.

How many people have actually tried the double lever option?
Is it just for aesthetic reasons that people don't like it?
-
• #4344
I might be giving the below a shot when I do go dual brake, yes it is super pricey but it is a tidy piece of kit!

^^^^^^^^^^ what part is this cov? linky?

This is the manufacturer and sjs's their distributor in the UK. They have 2 versions: Short and Long but the long travel one is listed as for shifter cables, might go for the L and see if it fits.
-
• #4347
I'm pretty sure you can only use that to make 2 levers operate 1 caliper. I'm struggling to work out how it could be used the other way round.edit: Hmm looked at the manufacturers website, looks like it could work, not totally convinced though. Especially at £30

Easy choice.

Easy choice being to make your own for less than £30 and have better braking performance using the design used for my dual brake and Max's.
The only machining is x3 5mm holes to drill so pretty simple.

what sort of front wheel do you use gabes? I will be in the market for a wheelset soon i think.
What's the difference between multi-release and the standard SPDs im used to?
