• just checked the weather and looks like its raining!

has anyone suggested the ncp car-park above toys r us if NIA doesn't work out? its not amazing but its sheltered and seems pretty quiet for central town.

theres gotta be a golden car park for polo somewhere in or close to town....do i take all bullrings car parks are no good? does millenium point have underground parking?? if anyone fancies an evening ride somepoint to cruise round town in search of the golden car park, holla.

As we were leaving the NCP car park above ToysRus the other Saturday night at midnight 2 security guards emerged from the lift. I think they were surprised by us riding past and told us to get out of there. I decided to it would be better to let them know we weren't doing any harm and were only there to chat and enjoy the view. As I approached to talk to them, the eldest who was about 70 raised the crowbar he was carrying and said "now don't do anything silly sonny". I stopped out of range of the crowbar and told them why we were there, they said we should leave which were doing anyway but they wanted to know how we got in. I calmed them down ( I think the old guy was surprised and scared at first) and then went to catch the others up. As we got to the exit the shutters were coming down but there was a button on the wall which raised them so we could get out.

Even if you find a suitable car park with empty upper levels you may need to clear it with security first, otherwise beware old blokes with crowbars!

  • yeah - i'm not sure ncp is where it's at.

the nia seems as good as it will get for wet-weather polo, but as i say, i'm not sure i'll be all too bothered to ride home from town in the rain, eat dinner, then get back out on my bike in the rain to possibly play polo.

i'm more coming round to the idea of twice-weekly polo, and just say it's weather-dependent.

on another note, i saw the court near paragon hotel in highgate/digbeth. it looks sweet. far better than calthorpe park - enclosed on all sides, with no actual football goals for the ball to get stuck in and no basketball nets either. it seems to be some perverse cricket/playground hybrid getup designed to waste public money... but pretty useful for polo... we should try it next time calthorpe is free (not sure if it's floodlit though).

I can't see an enclosed court there but I was looking for a decent loop in/near that park for the 'track punks' race... seems like a nice area if abit ghetto

there are some courts near tesco broad st in town, seen them? looked nice when i went past, but potentially a bit ghetto

you go onto ryland st off broad st, carry on over grosvenor st west for about 100m and its on the left

  • when i say enclosed i mean the perimeter is fenced, but this one in highgate is much better fenced than the one in calthorpe. should mean games are more fluid than at the moment when errant shots result in a restarts.

the preponderance of basketball/football/cricket courts seems to rise in direct proportion to the ghettoness of the area. highgate: 2, balsall heath: 1, moseley: 0.

  • true, i suppose the opposite can be said for bowling greens.

i dunno about cricket though... harborne?

  • what would be ace would be if there were to be such a facility that would be the direct equivalent of the walsall arboretum, wherein there are fenced tennis courts with removable nets. that doesn't make any sense at all but i cant be arsed to delete it and rewrite it

  • I cant believe I actually went to polo. Finally, a small amount of motivation.

Don't really wanna get the camera out around Calthorpe Park though, it's bare ghetto, mans dem was lookin rah shady.
my mate who lives round the corner was gonna bring her camera out tonight after i told her about the polo, she'll be disappointed to know she lives in a ghetto ;)

i won't be coming tonight, not feeling too good today, was enough of a struggle getting to work this morning.

thanks all for your hospitality on sunday, will come to the next session. my bruises are fading nicely :D

heh, nuff skin loss! that was a harsh-looking crash, must have been sore.

helen crashed nuff as well, must be sore.

  • i don't think drop bars are optimum for polo.

update: 'tis dry! rejoice! get your ass down to calthorpe in 24 minutes...

  • yeah, I have a pretty impressive bruise on my hand/ wrist, which is attracting quite a lot of attention! I just tell them I'm a bare-knuckle fighter...

gonna get some new handlebars sorted for the next round of polo me thinks! Apologies for my awful co-ordination and subsequent collisions!

  • You should apologise to the floor - I think you hurt it ;-)
