Reading between the lines, it looks like they don't trust Adkins to bring in the right sort of players, and right means cheap in this instance. Probably hoping that Pochettino can do a Laudrup and find another player like Michu for small beer.

I'm in agreement that I think its a strange move, like players, it takes managers a while to figure out the premiership as well. Adkins was out of his depth early on, but has got the team playing better, and getting results whilst still playing good attacking football, and not shipping as many goals as they did at the beginning of the season. I didn't get the sense that Southampton were in freefall or looking to slip straight back into the championship.

Pochettino has only managed Espanyol, and he's not a name I've heard much of, but Sid Lowe has good things to say about him, and it seems his removal from the helm at Espnayol had more to do with boardroom machinations than his skill as a coach.

Well they have been leaking all over the place at the back this season.

Adkins spent a fair bit of money - non of which have had a great impact (Jay rodriguez has played well, but 7m?) Gaston Ramirez at 12m looks a terrible bit of business.

Yoshida and Clyne have looked decent signings.

I still think it's utterly stupid to replace him with a manager who has a win ration of around 30%
What they are hoping to achieve replacing him half way through the transfer window and after a really impressive run of results I honestly can't fathom.
