  • I hate VAR for the simple reason that it just kills the joy of the game, that goal celebrations are muted or delayed for VAR checks. Just bin it. The negatives far outweigh any positives.

Goal line technology can stay and I think semi-automated offsides could work, but the rest can go in the bin.

  • Obviously not, but I thought it was interesting.

  • I'd imagine that was probably mostly down to which channel was showing which and people not bothering to change the channel.

  • VAR should be operated by our AI overlords. If Skynet was making the decisions we would all be towing the line you can't tell me it's that difficult to train up an ai model for the basics of the game. Offside and goals should take minutes with the amount of video data available.

The problem currently is the amount of people involved who have admitted bias, eg helping their ref mates or not wanting to be called out for tight decisions. If they cod anonymise the refs and teams from the car team it would be good. There should be professional var people not old refs and there should be an anonymous Comms link between them, no "chats"

  • Any footie fan with knowledge of the game could do a better and quicker job in the VAR box with all that tech. Though the tricky part would be finding 100% neutrals
As others have mentioned, just scrap it for the most part.

This - I started reading and didn't bother changing, before eventually realising it had switched to USPGA golf some time previously. Actually left it on as it was quite a peaceful ASMR-type background noise.

  • Refereeing was poor and VAR fucking useless. To try to calculate the lines to mm's when a frame of ball leaving boot either side can make a difference either way is ridiculous.
Add also the preposterous handball rule.
From a Villa POV it was an amazing season, but overall a shame the promoted sides couldn't make more of an impression. Plus the points deduction shenanigans. But in the end I think most clubs finished in pretty much the same place as LY, so a lot of bluster for not much change.
Looking forward to Ipswich coming back up - hope you can hang on to McKenna. Manager merry-go-round might be more interesting than transfers this summer.

  • Will be interesting if they do (and hopefully they do*) get rid of VAR, as the refs and linos seem to have got lazier and less professional knowing that someone in Stockley Park will do their job for them.

    *they won't

  • To try to calculate the lines to mm's when a frame of ball leaving boot either side can make a difference either way is ridiculous.

Offside should be judged on the position of players at the beginning of the contact with the ball:

    https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/offside/#offside-position

A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
    ...
*The first point of contact of the ‘play’ or ‘touch’ of the ball should be used.

But, yes, the same problem still occurs as judging which exact frame that the first point of contact is made is still tricky.

In maths this is known as a sensitivity problem. A small change in one of the inputs can result in a large change in the outcome.

If we say it is 3 frames (at 60Hz) then that's 1/20th of a second.

1/20th of a second of a striker running at 10 meters per second will be 50cm.

VAR should have taken this into account and only ruled for obvious situations. Any doubt (including considering error) and they should default to letting the goal stand.

But then I think the game would be better without it completely.

  • The semi-automated offside sensors are meant to poll 500 times a second to get round this.

  • Graham poll at 500 hz

  • VAR is 9hz.

  • well thank fuck Southgate has binned Hendo and Rashford, and Sterling for that matter. and may take some younger, more in form players

  • If we lose McKenna I think we're fucked - what he's been able to do is get the best out of the existing players and only add players who fit his system - I feel like a new manager having to implement a new system and recruit for the Premier League is going to have too much to do.

Just have to hope McKenna thinks that Brighton are too similar a proposition to Ipswich with less reward, and United/Chelsea are coming a bit too soon. A decent season with Ipswich would hugely improve his stock and his next step could be even bigger.

  • Luke Shaw over Leif Davis is daft though.

And Solanke and Dier are a bit hard done by.

Risky decision innit, even if you go down it might not necessarily kill his hype if you put up a decent fight, i.e. Rob Edwards is being linked with replacing him if he leaves. Brighton could well be a poisoned chalice in that the squad was much weaker this season and they could well sell Mitoma. That said Kompany seems to be failing upwards if reports linking him with Bayern are correct.

  • Poch out!

  • Pocchetino out at Chelsea it appears.

  • I mean, that is just crazy.

  • He's far too nice to be there, so maybe Brighton would be a better fit? A club with some class.

  • just as he got chelsea into the europa conference league too
    for shame

  • FFS basket case of club. Warmed to Potch and sad to see him leave. I recon he wanted more control and clashed with them on the board.
FFS clearlake really are fucking it up.

    Madness.

  • third time's a charm for jose ?

  • Time to get Klopp in?
