Gareth Southgate, and his team, have determined that the archetypal centre forward target man is redundant. Whilst we can all remember some pay offs, Beckham-Carroll 8(?) years ago, we also have the bumbling efforts of Crouch, Heskey, all the way back to Mariner.
Carefully crafted deadball training routines using centre halves as targets & decoys means England still have an attacking threat without the deadweight of a poor 1st touch gangling striker. Would be different if we had a Diego Costa or a Drogba, but currently we don't.
