I think it is becoming clear that those players you stated voiced a loss of faith in the manager. The board had to make a decision to get rid of the manager or their top players. If they kept Benitez and sold the players, they clearly did not trust him to spend the cash wisely.

I still think Gerrard will go and maybe one of the other names you mentioned. But hopefully that will be that. All depends on who they bring in and how much they have to spend

The board seems to have played a blinder here, Benitez couldn't really stay knowing that nobody he wanted him, but turning down the 3m makes him seem greedy. If he doesn't take it, he won't need to be sacked, he'll have to quit won't he. Or could he file for constructive dismissal?
