Europa League? The biggest issue for me is that the games are on Thursday. So that screws up the following weekend one way or another.
It's not enough money for a "big" club to focus on that (like the Champions League is). So yeah, I'm 50/50 on it. It's not terrible to be in it, but I'd also take 7 days rest between games.

Oh, and not forgetting all the games against FC Dynamo Vladivostok and such. CL games tend to be a bit more concentrated around the big leagues in Western Europe, so there is less travel. You don't want to be landing at 3am on Friday morning, with a game in 36 hours.

Europa League could one day become awesome again if it was a Cup
Same applies to Champions LeagueKnockout or GTFO>>>>
already bored by the prospect of meaningless European nights next season before being knocked out by Juve or Chelsea in the QFs

Point me to the data sources....

sports scientist Raymond Verheijen, who worked closely with the FFA to design their Football Periodisation Model, analysed 27,000 matches across seven major European leagues as well as the Champions League and Europa League. His results found that teams that had two days recovery compared to at least three were 42% less likely to win.

Don't all Europa teams play on a Sunday after their midweek matches? This would be the same as a CL team playing Wednesday and Saturday, yeah?
And the distance thing? Come on, a nice airplane trip to an unknown land is much more fun than a drizzly Tuesday night in Blackpool (or Boro).*
* Neither of which we are likely to have to endure next season**
** Every cloud and all that...

According to this ^, it's an average of 2.3 places worse but if you get to the quarter finals or better, it's 2.7 places worse the season you're in the Europa.
Particularly bad if you are Norwich or Ipswich.
No ill effects if you are Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U or, surprisingly, Millwall. -

That's because we overspent on shit players and after finishing fifth in our first season after promotion, then shat ourselves and dropped out of the league. I don't think it's because of UEFA. We beat Inter at Portman Road.

I'm pretty sure we played at least one Thursday - Saturday combo, due to TV games. I guess that's the price you pay for all those plastic fans.

Hmm not this year, might have been last time.

I've spoken about this many times, we (English clubs and their fans) value the prestige of the champions league and belittle everything else. No other European clubs in the Europa league would even dream of not taking it seriously. Thurs Sun is no harder than wed sat, and if your team doesn't have the strength in depth to cope with midweek football in the Europa how is it going to cope with midweek games in the champions league when you've got to win them otherwise what was all the huffing and puffing about to get there in the first place!
You've got to have two players for every position and no huge drop off between them to do well in Europe or at least a lot of injury prevention to keep your big players fit. The Europa just exposes how thin most squads outside the top four are, which then affects how you perform in the league.
Think of the Europa as a proving ground for how competitive a team can be in the champions league see atletico Madrid as an example. Won Europa league, won domestic league, made champions league final.

CL is much more of a money spinner though. It's worth risking a struggle for the extra cash.
Just being in the group stage is worth between €12m and €21m. Then €5M+ for each extra round, all the way up to €15M for winning the final.
Europe League is €1-2m for the group stage, and a max total revenue of €10m for going all the way to the final and winning.
So just being in the CL is worth more than winning the Europa League.
The difference of one spot in the PL is around £2M, so based on the average drop of places posted above, the Europa League does not seem like a good idea (financially)

Well in Chelsea. Proper work that.
Well played John Terry
Another 90 minutes without his being overtly racist.
Wouldn't it be great if Leicester beat Newcastle at the weekend?
-
• #116973
Yes, but a) only if we beat Everton and b) only by one goal.
-
• #116974
Get in!

• #116975
beat Everton by one goal
That might happen.
Leicester deserve to go down really but they seem a bit loathe to allow it.
Good luck Villa, I say.
But it's not a large enough sum of money to make a difference to any of the above (in a meaningful way).
Ground capacity is ~26,000. Let's say 22,000 of those are season tickets. A £50 increase across all of those is £1.1m for the full year. A drop in the ocean compared to selling / buying a player or the increase of £20m in TV rights money.
It seems like a paltry amount to raise by pissing of so many people.
