In short, every Prem team names a maximum squad of 25 players in August and January. Only those players, and youth players may be used in the Premiership.

Of those 25, at least 8 must be "homegrown". That means they must have been with an English or Welsh club for at least 3 years before the age of 21. 85% of those qualifying players are British, which is one of the reasons there is a premium on good British players.
