  • I'd PM you right away, but I'm in NURSERY mode..... so if you see this before I qualify.... then PM me please!

  • Ditto with the nursery... PM coming as soon as (although this thread is a little long in the tooth, hope you wheelbuilders haven't hibernated for the winter).

  • how much to build 2 rears and a front

  • hmm this is interesting , iwas wondering whether to buy, try building my self, or now get someone to do it for me. Putney is real close by to me so I may just do that.

  • Build them yourself. Its not that hard.

If you're spending uber sums of money on hubs and rims, for the cost you may as well get a really good w.builder to do it for you (arup/dogsballs/etc.), but anything low to mid level I'd def do yourself.

Loads of good info here and on web in general, really nothing to be scared of.

OK then, you've convinced me!! I just need to get clued up on the info, i dont want to get the wrong spoke lengths :p

Good on you! its very satifying when you build your own set of wheels.

I think what it is that sort of puts people off is the thought of building it wrong and then it failing dramatically while you are riding it lol.

  • If you not close to someone who can teach you...
I found this very helpful. Built several pairs now using those instructions (and the home-made wooden jig).
Was nervous on first few rides, but they were so nice, light, fast, - and 36h 3X on a good rim is pretty much indestructible, so I'd be very reluctant to use anything else now.

As long as you remember to put all the spokes in i'm sure you will not fail dramatically, simply building a wheel is quite simple once you understand the concept, and that way you can build yourself aa wheelset for about £100, open sport rims, on one hubs, dt swiss spokes, that will build you a very good wheelset.

  • I had a set of Mavic CXP-33s and Phil Wood hubs - built one myself, had one built. A year or so on and mine occasionally needs a little tweak, the other is perfect...

  • few quick quwestions not really worth their own thread.

My wheels arent 700c, and im going to attempt to build my own wheelsin the next week or so so i really want o get this right first time.

How do i know the rim im going to buy is the right size for my frame? the websites dont seem to display that needed info and can anyone recommend a good place to buy them, nice and cheap preferrably. What are the best types of spokes to get for my wheel? Had a look on S.brown but its only info not really direct for my project.

And also how do i know if th ehub/spoke/rim comination will work without having it tested before hand?

    Any help appreciated! thanks.

  • Match the number of holes in the rim to the hub and you should be fine. Spoke length requires a calculator - normally a large chart which can be found in your LBS. They can help with getting the right length spokes if you give them rim and hub info. Although I actually found people on this forum more helpful than my LBS...

  • i use this to calculate my spokes http://lenni.info/edd/

  • cheers guys but what about determining what size wheel to get? Ive looked on afew sites and they dont display what size it is just the basicdetails like this http://www.evanscycles.com/products/mavic/open-pro-road-rim-ec006518

its says how many holes its got but not what size it is, or am i missing something here?? bare with me this is my first build. :p

    ETRTO compatible size: 571 x 15
    ETRTO compatible size: 622 x 15
    Recommended nipple length: 12 mm
    Recommended rim tape: 571 x 18 x 0.6
    Recommended rim tape: 622 x 16 x 0.6
Recommended tire widths: 19 to 28 mm
    Valve hole diameter: 6.5 mm

  • its for a road bike '97. Cheers CasaSteve, that the right kind of info i was after. Guess i should have looked a bit harder lol.

  • what kind of frame is it for? why you think its not 700c?

  • ok just did a quick check out side and the tyre is saying this 700 x 25, and there also seem to be fractionals involved so that suggests to me its not 700c but if someone can correct me? Im worried 'cause i just bought a new brake sys and any smaller tyre will make it useless, so if anything i will need to go slightly bigger. i have roughhly 1 and 1/2 inches of wheel clearance before it hits the middle section of the fork.

  • if you need the precise numbers just ask, its only a mtter of 1 minute to get them. thanks!
