• Bikes in London ftw. Cars have their place.

    Hippy the voice of reason!

  • There isn't an option for "mostly bike some tank"

    :-)

    That's awesome ;-)
But don't you need the arms trade in order to keep the tank on the road?

  • Double panniers + toddler seat with toddler FTW

heavy goods in the panniers and bulky goods (cereal boxes etc.) carried by the toddler (dont drop it son, or we'll have to have brocolli for breakfast all week)

You have just reminded me I should fit my touring rack on the pub/station bike.

  • 1000+ posts and it's still "you're with us or against us". I'm still secretly hoping that at some point they'll lighten up and stop taking any other point of view as something other than a personal attack. I have some (probably) valid / valuable opinions which I'd love to post in that thread, but frankly I daren't, the censorship in that thread is impossible.

I'm not a big part of that thread, but I haven't really got that impression. I think I actually wrote a post encouraging people to engage in intelligent debate, rather than some vitrioloic 'you car driving Nazi' stuff (if the tags are anything to go by). The majority of 'anti-thread' posts have been about the presence of a thread on cars on a bike forum, rather than a rational discussion of car (over)use and its alternatives.

    But anyway...

  • there are bigger issues in the world than the presence of a car thread on a bike forum...

  • there are bigger issues in the world than the presence of cars ...

    not so sure about that.

Like what? Give me one example, just one...... ;)

  • I, Winston totally agree with Ved in his post above, may I also mention he is a smashing fellow.

    Thanks Winston !

    Cheers Ved.

  • @ Scott...respect is due and all, but actually i think that this is a highly valid thread that should stand on it's own, the fact that it may have been born as a reaction to "the car thread" is probably a good thing......there are probably loads of people too scared to post what they really think about cars over there for fear of being labelled a "hater" when in reality theres quite a lot of sense in being a hater of "car culture" if not the actual cars themselves..

Personally this thread has already made me question the use of my car and whether I use it too much.....I like to kid myself that I've got loads of green "credits" stacked up as in the 22 years I've been eilgible to drive I've only owned a car for three and driven less than 30k ....previously having only used public transport and my bike...however don't think global warming works like that does it? it's what we're doing NOW that matters.

I occasionally have to drive in London for work....why anyone would choose to do this as a method of personal transport is totally beyond me, unbelievably slow and frustrating, no wonder there's road rage and anger against cyclists.....it's almost understandable!

  • Like what? Give me one example, just one...... ;)

Well since you asked nicely here's one...

Bikes with too many headset spacers, I mean WTF...!

  • Well like i say, if i'm wrong (and more often than not i am) then fair play.
I'm glad it's having some positive effect.

  • Yep, there are more important things. Having said that, multi-colored spacers FTW!

  • Personally this thread has already made me question the use of my car and whether I use it too much.....

This thread has made me question weather I use my bike enough! I am a south west trains bitch at the moment :(

  • All the christmas partying has put the kibosh on a lot of my cycling. Normally 99% bike, 0.9% public transport and 0.1% car/taxi...

Although last time I drove a car I put the wrong fuel in it and drove a couple of miles! The hidden costs of drug use... one spliff cost me £200 in mechanics fees!

  • there are probably loads of people too scared to post what they really think about cars over there for fear of being labelled a "hater" when in reality theres quite a lot of sense in being a hater of "car culture" if not the actual cars themselves..

Spot on - my problem is with people using cars to make unnecessary journeys, or where alternative methods are available (but also realistic in terms of time taken and cost of travel). I do like cars though, and honestly can't see the problem with appreciation of engineering, form/aesthetic and performance.

  • i completely agree with ved on this one,

  • The block of flats I live in is a new build - one of the stated provisos on purchasing the flat was that it was a car free developmnet, no parking places on site but two streetcar vehicles in the forecourt and no right to apply for a local parking permit.

Other than one guy who has a van for work and rents a local garage there are no cars. It's been great watching more and more bikes appearing in the secure bike store attached to the building and the fact that so many of the residents now ride

  • i too am really tring to reduce my travelling by car, it would have been easier if all my family lived in one place really lol

  • thanks to this forum though i have the courage and energy to cycle more and more and fixed is just too much fun

Thats nice BDW, as long as the secure bike store is properly secure that sounds like a great set up.

This is a condition of planning permission for alot of new developments - certainly the ones down by the river in Battersea were all like that. I think it's excellent.

Similarly new office builds in town are only allowed minimal parking spaces.

    Shite....has it come to this?????

You have just reminded me I should fit my touring rack on the pub/station bike.

    +1
TBH, my rear panniers + rear toddler seat setup doesnt actually lend itself to steering the bike.

Oh and BTW what we really need is a bike thread in a car forum ;)

    Have a look at:

    http://pistonheads.com/gassing/forum.asp?h=0&f=174

Most people use many modes, and there is usually a lot of overlap.

  • Was there really a need to open with that? I missed all that car bolloxs thing, so don't know what went on, but let sleeping dogs lie and all

Point taken--I've edited it. It only survives in your quote now. Remove it from there, too, if you want.
